Dr. Mollie Powell grew up in Northern Virginia and always knew she wanted to work with animals. She realized that veterinary medicine was her calling while caring for her guinea pig, Diablo, through his illness. The experience reinforced her love of caring for animals, but also sparked a passion for understanding the science behind disease and treatment.

Dr. Powell earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from George Mason University, with a minor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation through the Smithsonian-Mason Conservation Biology Institute. During college, she began working as a veterinary assistant. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, where she pursued additional training in surgery and exotic animal medicine. After graduation, she completed a rotating small animal internship at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, Virginia.

Dr. Powell moved to the Bay Area in 2021. After two years working in emergency medicine at a multi-species emergency hospital, she transitioned to small animal and exotic animal general practice in 2023. Her professional interests include exotic animal medicine—especially small mammals—soft tissue surgery, and emergency medicine. Her goal is to work collaboratively with owners to find the best solution for their and their pet’s needs, rather than simply pursuing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Dr. Powell lives in Castro Valley with her husband, Ernesto, their Cocker Spaniel, Bonnie, and guinea pig, Bean. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys motorcycling, dog training and sports, hiking, trap and s***t shooting, and playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Yes, your dog can also tear their ACL. We usually see them more commonly in bigger dogs, but this sweet girl happened to tear her ACL! We diagnose a tear in their cranial cruciate ligament when they are sedated, as it can be a painful orthopedic exam. The best way to help your pet feel more comfortable is to do a TPLO surgery. The TPLO surgery stands for Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy and it essentially is a surgery that changes the knee’s biomechanics and repair the ligament torn!
