Even though Labor Day has passed, warm weather is still with us! As temperatures remain high, it’s crucial to take extra precautions to keep our beloved pets safe and comfortable. Dogs and cats face unique challenges in hot weather since they only sweat through their paws and rely primarily on panting to cool down. Here’s your comprehensive guide to protecting your furry friends during the warmer months.

Welcome to Demi and Mr. Gray to our home practice 🥰

Two lovely indoor kitties that have been struggling with fleas 😔, we’ll help get this under control pronto :)

It is so important to have all indoor kitties (and dogs) on reliable year round flea prevention. Fleas are much easier to prevent than to eliminate. They also transmit bacterial diseases, can cause anemia, skin infections, and lead to intestinal parasites such as tapeworms.

In the Bay Area, we’ve seen a lot of fleas resistant to Frontline and Advantage. There are much better prescription flea preventatives that are only available through your vet. Bravecto, Credelio, and Revolution Plus to name a few.

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I did an introduction. If you have been following along for a long time thank you and welcome to our new followers!

My name is Dr. Marcia Medrano. I’m a first generation Bolivian American who’s always loved animals. I grew up in Miami, Florida surrounded by stray kitties to feed, local iguanas and other critters in my neighborhood. At that time, I knew I always wanted animals in my life.

I attended St George’s University Veterinary School in the Caribbean. It was the best experience of my life and where I met most of my closest friends. We studied horses, sheep, donkeys and goats at the nearby farms and took care of the dogs and cats at the local hospital.

I completed my final clinical year at the University of Pennsylvania. I realized I had more hands-on animal experience than the U.S. students, due to my schooling on an island, I loved every minute.

I eventually ventured to New York, then California where I have been an SF California girl ever since. I worked at several Bay Area Emergency hospitals, such as Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital where I still practice medicine from time to time. My true calling is at home veterinary medicine. In 2014 I started MedranoVets and I have never been happier. My mobile veterinary practice allows me to provide a stress free experience to all my patients and clients in their most comfortable environment, their home. It is incredibly rewarding to have pets and owners more comfortable for exams and procedures. I can also spend 45-60 mins on a visit, which gives us time to discuss any and all concerns. It is often only in a pets’ home where they can show more authentic behaviors and symptoms. My favorite thing about my job is cuddling dogs and cats during their exam and having pet parents tell me that the visit was so much better than going into an office.

Please share with us what you’d like to see more of on our page! Thank you so much!

Cats and dogs may be exercising more than just your patience: they could be keeping parts of your brain ticking over too.

In a potential breakthrough for preventive health, researchers have found that owning a four-pawed friend is linked to slower cognitive decline by potentially preserving specific brain functions as we grow older.

Interestingly, the associations differ depending on the animal: dog owners were found to retain sharper memory, both immediate and delayed, while cat owners showed slower decline in verbal fluency.

When it comes to slower cognitive decline in their owners, however, it seems that not all pets are created equal: fish and birds, while charming companions, showed no significant link.

“[It is] possible that interaction with dogs and cats provides unique cognitive stimulation, which may be less pronounced in other, less demanding pets,” said Adriana Rostekova, the lead author of the article.

Rostekova examined the relationship between pet ownership and cognitive decline over an 18-year period among adults aged 50 and older.

Happy National Kitten Day!

6 Adoption Tips

Follow the shelter’s guidelines and keep these tips in mind when adopting:

There’s an application process. Read through it and understand it. The guidelines are for the safety of the animals, the employees, and you.

Ask questions. It’s important there’s an understanding between you and the shelter. Most shelters have volunteers and paid employees. However, they work on a very tight budget. Please don’t expect any special accommodations.

A good shelter will place the interests of the animal first. They want the cat to have a successful placement. Some animals have anxiety while others get along with anyone and every type of animal.

Consider the size of your home and where you live - an apartment or house.

Who lives with you? That includes people and pets - does everyone get along and does anyone have allergies?

How much time do you have for a pet?

So you’ve spotted the kitten for you. Be sure to make several visits to the shelter. Play with the kitten. Spend time grooming them. See how the kitten reacts to other cats. Learn the kitten’s behavior.

If you choose to adopt a kitten today or this month, make sure to DM us for 20% off your first wellness exam, comment and share to your stories! We look forward to meeting your new kitties!
