Unlike people, dogs only sweat minimally through their paw pads. Their main cooling system is panting, which is much less efficient than sweating across the body. That’s why dogs can overheat faster than we do, even in mild warm weather.

As temperatures rise through May and June:
• Walk during cooler hours
• Bring fresh water
• Watch for heavy panting or fatigue

A microchip is one of the most important things you can do for your pet, and it takes about the same amount of time as a routine vaccination.

A microchip is a small implant placed under the skin between the shoulder blades. It carries a unique identification number that can be read with a standard scanner at most veterinary hospitals and shelters.

Unlike a collar or tag, a microchip cannot fall off, be removed, or fade over time.

In California, all dogs are required to be microchipped or licensed. For cats, microchipping is strongly recommended.

The most important step after microchipping is registering the chip with your current contact information and keeping that registration up to date when you move or change your phone number.

The problem with the 'one taste won't hurt' approach is that the threshold for a toxic response varies widely and is not always predictable.

May is peak foxtail season in San Francisco.

If you walk your dog at Fort Funston, Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, or anywhere with dry open grassland, this post is for your dog.

Foxtails are now at their most dangerous. The grass has dried and the awns are fully barbed. They attach to fur easily and move in one direction only, which is deeper.

Foxtail injuries are emergencies. Come in immediately. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Walk-ins welcome.
