Project Open Paw

Project Open Paw Our mission is to provide food and vet care to the pets of the homeless in San Francisco. We rely on donations, so any help is greatly appreciated!

I started Project Open Paw around 5 years ago, when I was working for a local boarding kennel and couldn't help noticing and befriending the many dogs and their people in the homeless encampments around the outskirts of the Mission district and under the freeways. I saw an opportunity to salvage perfectly good dog food that was being thrown away if the dogs weren't eating it, and thus began the jo

urney and mission to feed these beautiful dogs. It grew to become one of the things that has brought me the greatest joy and happiness I have known in my life. Feeding, providing blankets, treats, toys, the essential kibble, and occasionally bringing them to work with me to give them baths or a quiet place to stay for a few hours and just straight up LOVING them. Many have come and gone, disappeared and reappeared from my life. But every one has touched me and enriched my life. Recent policy changes have cut off the lifeblood of my operation, the kibble. So I am asking all of you to donate any unwanted food that your dog's don't like, food you find off the street, etc. Anything helps and is better than what they would eat without our help. I have a GoFundMe and Instagram account set up under the name Project Open Paw and encourage each of you to give whatever you can, anything helps! Message me here or any of the other accounts and I will gladly pick up food in the city or tell you where you can get it to me. Thank you all and please spread the word as far and wide as you can. With great appreciation, Paul Crowell

❤🐾April 29th and 30th runs🐾❤ I rushed through the week's first feeding run on Weds., seeing most of our regular angels on the that stretch of route speedily, as I had a special delivery to make.. That delivery would be our big boy Blue back to his mom after 9 days with me recovering from his neuter surgery and ready for his high activity and energy level life once again...The boy was not fond of being cooped up, as no 7 month old pup is.. And it was time It proved to be bittersweet as we had grown very close during his stay but my heart is used to this torture, and with my house full of animals the revolving door needs to keep spinning for the next mutt in need.. I honestly love having a patient under my care at all times, but a break in between makes me relish the privilege and honor even more.. Blue was happy to be out and about with me and just cuddled and leaned on me while we waited on the train... We had become so physically close now because he just needed so much interaction and touch like the big ole baby he is.. The train ride went by too fast, just because I knew our stay was ending.. But I was excited to bring him home, knowing how much both his human and dog mamas were missing him.. We came in on one of the back streets serendipitously , because there were Millie and mom , sadly being evicted by the SFPD and DPW, along with the other folks they camp and travel with.. It wasn't enough to ruin the happy reunion we had coming though, as the love between these three is deeper and stronger than a simple situation.. .Millie went absolutely nuts when I released our big baby boy, causing a big scene in the middle of an even bigger production.. Bluey was oh so ready to play after over a week of being cooped up and was all over his beautiful mama. She was apparently overdue for some playtime as well, with Blue being her only.playmate nowadays.. Human mom had to pry them apart so she could get her arms around the baby and squeeze him tight, and believe me he is extra squeezable like Charmin.. This precious moment was well worth all of Blue's mischief, which mostly centered around his destruction of my bathroom, which I couldn't even be mad about because looking through the eyes of love one can do no wrong, after all.. It was sad to leave them in this terrible situation but they were together again and are plenty accustomed to these cruel homeless sweeps, so honestly I am more adversely affected emotionally by them than they are... I rushed through my daily deliveries on Thursday as I was meeting up with the team from the SFSPCA Community Ambassadors and excited to get some of our families we hadn't been able to get to yet.. I only found a few at home with the early hour anyway, starting with my precious little pit/bully/Great Dane mix family. Lucy, Molly and Cebus...They were all beyond thrilled to see me and as usual rushed my cart, desperate for the toys they associate me so closely with. Dad and I had to enforce some kind of order and manners because they are like a crew of pirates looting a ship dying to get to that bountiful basket of b***y, aka the toys..Cebus and Molly always end up in a tug of war and chase game immediately with whatever they get, because Molly just wants what's his no matter what.. Lucy is much more guarded and serious with her playthings and takes them far away from her silly siblings, and God forbid one of them should come near it! These kids bring me so much joy just by being themselves and their dad is just so grateful for.their six grub bags which are an equal blessing to the one that they gift my heart with. My pretty pittie girls Broc and Shiloh pulled over their van to see me on my way to the rendezvous spot and took a couple of grub bags off of my cartload and lightened my treatbag as well as dad and I chatted.. It took him years to trust me and now it's hard to dismiss myself to carry on with the route, he likes talking to me so much.. Which is all well and good but I'm not really all that much into long.conversations (although you couldn't tell that by these long winded posts and stories!😁) The meeting spot with the SPCA girls is also the camp of my big pit/bully family and I arrived a little early, which was the perfect excuse to spend some time in the exquisite company of Boscoe, Midnight, Chewy 2E and Angel ( Freckles, Panda and Mina must have been out with mom) for a while. They were slightly befuddled about why I wasn't unloading thier usual small mountain of grub bags so I distracted them with something they love equally, the meaty delights from my treat bag.. It ended up being a short session as the van rolled up and I joined the ladies to go and administer vaccines, flea meds and dewormers to those we were blessed with finding.. The first of these was beautiful Chula and Princess at their camper.. I hadn't seen them in ages but had seen their dad earlier and told him we'd be by later to get the girls taken care of.. I hadn't seen them in so long as the rivalry between Lola and Princess had me always sneaking around to prevent them from fighting over lil ole me...Dad informed me that he had had to give my old friend Lola away because the fights had gotten that bad and now just the two beauties remained.. Dad brought both ladies out and had me hold them while he completed paperwork with the techs, which proved to be no easy task as Chula is huge and strong as an ox.. Our giant girl went first with a big assist from dad and me, much needed as she jumped right on one of the tech girls, andt she's easily 100 lbs!. She proved to be a jumpy and wiggly patient in her excitement, bending the first needle when we tried to vaccinate her.. But with our team of four we got her done and also applied flea meds and got that yucky dewormer into her mouth as well🤢) Princess, who is one of the cutest bullies in the world🥰 proved to be much easier to handle and charmed us all with her ultra adorableness, they just don't come cuter than this.. They were rewarded with new toys, leashes and bowls from me and the team and we received the most excellent gift in return from their papa, his consent to get Chula sprayed! I can't wait to get her taken care of and have her spend a few days with me for recovery! We had to stop by my sweet Titi's rv next to ensure that she got another round of dewormers in her, as her dad says she had quite the infestation...She begrudgingly allowed us to sq**rt the uckinees into her.mouth, remembering the awful taste from the last time we treated her.. I made up for her displeasure with her favorite thing in the world, a new toy, of course, and all was forgiven...The SPCA girls got called off for an emergency and had to return to hq asap, kindly carting me and my wagon along so I could hit Petco for the Friday run. And that was that for another satisfying days in the life of The Doggyfoodman, with lives touched and hearts minds and bodies healed.. Please help us continue our essential work by sharing this and all of our posts and donating if you can.. We have some urgent needs in the upcoming week, which include paying for Julia's remains, the phone bill and Maggie, our sweet senior pitizen's vet visit and of course the food bill...So every donation and share is truly appreciated and needed right now...Thank you so much for caring, much love and God bless us all..🐾❤🙏
