Namaste Akita Rescue Alliance

Namaste Akita Rescue Alliance We are a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization, dedicated to the rescue, rehoming & welfare of Akita dogs in need.

Namaste Akita Rescue, a California non-profit organization dedicated to rehoming and to place and adopt Akitas in need. The plight and background of every Akita in our program are unique, however, they all share the same hope of finding loving, compassionate homes. We put a great deal of careful thought and consideration into choosing a name for our organization. It was important to choose somethi

ng that epitomized what it is that inspires us to rescue the breed we love and cherish. We also wanted a name that when
spoken, would serve as a constant reminder to us to always be true to the breed. Regardless of beliefs, experiences, or paths in life, the word Namaste has many translations however it is universally recognized as one of peace, honor and respect. For us, the single most meaningful translation is best summed up in one simple phrase, "The spirit in me honors the spirit in you". We honor the spirit of a breed who survived near extinction in World War II, and managed to thrive again through the will of the breed and the efforts of many. We honor the breed which was declared Japan’s National Monument. We honor and respect the breed whose ancestry dates back centuries to one of the oldest of native dogs. We honor the untainted spirit of the Akita breed. We are committed to the welfare of these Akitas. We are a small but dedicated group of volunteers with full-time jobs and families and animals of our own. We have only a few individuals to do the task of many. Each juggles a multitude of tasks necessary to care for the dogs in our program and ensure they are ready and well prepared to be placed in forever homes. Our volunteers spend their weekends and evenings evaluating applications, walking and socializing the dogs, taking them to veterinary appointments, grooming and training them, and tending to their needs. Our focus is on the Akitas at risk of euthanasia in our local shelters. We also assist Akita owners who are unable to keep their Akitas and need a safe way to re-home them. Ideally, we hope to be able to provide assistance and resources for those owners to find solutions to challenges that would otherwise prevent them from keeping their dogs. Namaste Akita Rescue is located in Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.

Anyone involved in Akita rescue knows Martin Kirchner is a super hero to all Akitas, and let’s not forget his super hero side kick Ann Kirchner. Without them, many Akitas would have languished in shelters.

Recently, Martin helped us layout a plan to help get Onyx (now Ronin), all the way from San Pedro to our kennel in the Bay Area. Any long-distance transport involving picking up a dog directly from a shelter means navigating a lot of paperwork, ensuring all i’s are dotted, t’s crossed and firm commitments are kept to pick up a dog during specific hours. Not easy when you are traveling all the way from AZ. Additionally, this often requires booking accommodations somewhere along the route so you can be ready when the shelter opens.

Thanks to Martin, Onyx/Ronin is here with us at Namaste Akita Rescue and is decompressing and easing into his new surroundings. More to follow, as we get more familiar with this big beautiful pup. His new name Ronin means “Wandering Samurai without a lord or master”. Seems fitting!

And she is here with us! Thank you Patrice, Marty, Elizabeth and Brad for all of your help and love you have given her. ...

And she is here with us! Thank you Patrice, Marty, Elizabeth and Brad for all of your help and love you have given her. The power of rescue when we come together is amazing. We couldn't have done this without South West Akita Tactical Rescue. ❤

UPDATE: We are amazed a beautiful sensitive soul like Akiji who was abused and left for dead, would seek out love and human affection…but he does.

It's inconceivable but he is giving us a chance to show we are better than his abuser. And we won’t fail him.

What does that say about animals who against all odds, forgive and trust regardless of the atrocities they’ve suffered? We’ve seen this type of resilience time and again with many of the Akitas we’ve had the honor of taking under our wing. But in the end when we think we are saving them, they are truly saving us.

Akiji is being treated for giardia and kennel cough so unfortunately his introduction into the world to begin the process of socialization and training is on pause. However, there is still plenty for him to learn while in the confines of his foster home, where he’s most comfortable and at ease. Despite still being tentative and insecure, Akiji has been incredibly brave.

Thank you to our good friend and NARA adopter, Karen F. for his first bath and to everyone for your support and thoughtful posts.

The world is waiting for Akiji, and we know you won’t be disappointed.

We have witnessed disturbing acts of violence committed against animals that make us want to look away and recoil in disgust. But looking away is not an option. And in contrast, we have also witnessed how these events bring out the best in incredible individuals who put humanity and compassion first. This is the account of some extraordinary people, who did just that for this beautiful Akita pup who we call Akiji.

These details will shatter your heart in a hundred pieces. First come tears, agony and grief followed by emotions of anger and retribution.

This pup’s cries were heard by an alert individual who contacted a friend for help. Her description below is what she discovered, upon arriving at this deserted field of weeds and mangled sections of chain link fencing.

“𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 𝗛𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻. 𝗔𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿. Today this sweet pup is with NARA in a foster home where he can decompress and learn to be a normal puppy. Initially he was nervous and would flinch if you tried to pet him or approach. He seems to realize now there are good people in this world. He is not yet available for adoption until we have had time to work with him and get to know him. Please check back for updates on his progress.

The deadline for our Holiday Fundraiser is quickly approaching and we have extended the deadline to November 20 to purchase the Dog Advent Calendars. They are the perfect gift for all dogs, your grand dogs, dog nieces and nephews or a favorite canine you know. Your purchase will impact the lives of less fortunate Akitas who still wait for their forever homes.

With the donations we received last year, we were able to help Saya. Saya was turned into a shelter emaciated and terribly neglected. Time was not on her side in a rural, over-crowded shelter. It is a tragic but common story for a young dog who should have had her whole life ahead of her. Once under our wing, we immediately began providing the necessary medical care, love, and nutrition she so desperately needed. She has blossomed and thanks to her new mom, now enjoys regular social activities with her pack of canine buddies who romp off leash on the beaches of San Francisco.

Please share with your doggy friends and family. We appreciate your support!
