I’m so grateful for your help Jim Faggiano. Some pups just take a bit longer to get with the program.

Helga VonSchern, my GSD and I have been through a lot of challenges together. She’s come back from Idopathic Thrombocytopenia and is kidney disease. Helga amazes me everyday. She hasn’t left my side since my surgery (106 days PostOp & still can’t walk). When Helga saw me in my wheelchair for the first time she was thrilled. It’s like a switch went off and everything Jim Faggiano (AKA: The Dog Father) taught her came back to her after 9 years. She walks beautifully next to my chair, and she is picking up items I drop and brings them to me. One more surgery to go and hopefully I will regain full use and feeling in my hands and arms, and Helga will continue to beat the odds with her health issues. I’d be lost without her.

Good news and not so good news

Let’s start with the not so good and end with great news.

I just had a MRI of my neck and learned from my neurosurgeon that my neck is worse than my lower back. I have to have my neck fused and it’s going to be a bigger surgery than my lumbar fusion. I have to have 5 vertebrae fussed in my neck. When this will happen sometime in the near future after I have recovered enough from my lumbar fusion. at least this explains why I have loss of feeling in my hands and arms, and explains the horrific pain as well as loss of the fine motor movements.

I was very lucky that someone canceled their surgery, and I’m able to have their spot. I’m getting my lumbar fusion next Wednesday. I’m scared and happy at the same time. Afraid of the pain but thrilled that my lower back is going to be fixed. I will be able to walk again! I know it’s gonna be a long road and difficult but I’m a fighter and always have been. I got this! I am so blessed that I have an outstanding neurosurgical team at UCSF and that my primary care physician has been by my side fighting with me to get this. I couldn’t ask for a more compassionate, dedicated and skilled team.

Helga has been such a comfort. My best friend has been by my side every minute and won’t leave me. When I cry from the pain she put her paw on in the palm of my hand. She stays like this all night with me. I’m so blessed to have such a compassionate and loving German Shepherd.

I have to go back for a 3rd back surgery, I unfortunately am unable to accept any new leather orders.
12/8/3020 Update: still waiting to just see the surgeon. Unfortunately the earliest appointment I could get isn’t until the end of January. I will keep you posted and let you know as soon as I can get back to leather working and start excepting new orders.🙏
