By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country. But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place. Over 20 million Native Americans dispersed across over 1,000 distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups populated the territory.
The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia. The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Miโ€™kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.
Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the โ€œGlory Days.โ€ It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the โ€œGlory Daysโ€ of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.
The Americasโ€™ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

Missed the first 20 minutes of the party dedicated to the end of filming of his new movie at one of the clubs in New York.
He waited patiently in the rain to be let in.
No one recognized him.
The club owner said: โ€œI didn't even know Keanu was standing in the rain waiting to get in - he didn't say anything to anyone.โ€
"He travels by public transport."
"He easily communicates with homeless people on the streets and helps them."
- He was only 60 years old (September 2, 1964)
- He can only eat hot dogs in the park, sitting among normal people.
- After filming one of the "Matrix", he gave all the stuntmen a new motorcycle - in recognition of their skills.
- He gave up most of the salaries of the costume designers and computer scientists who drew the special effects on "The Matrix" - deciding that their share of the film's budget was assessed short.
- He reduced his salary for the movie "The Devil's Advocate" to have enough money to invite Al Pacino.
- Almost at the same time his best friend passed away; His girlfriend lost a child and soon died in a car accident, and his sister suffered from leukemia.
Keanu didn't fail: he donated $5 million to the clinic that treated his sister, refused to be filmed (to be with her), and founded the Leukemia Foundation, donating significant amounts from each fee for the movie.
You may have been born a man, but stay a man..

During the American Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work relief program that began in 1933 and ended in 1942. The effort employed millions of men on conservation projects across the country. The New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped to battle high unemployment of the Great Depression. Alongside the CCC, the Indian Emergency Conservation Work (IECW) program was created later in 1933. In 1937, the program was renamed the Civilian Conservation Corps Indian Division (CCC-ID).The Commissioner of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, John Collier, believed similar work relief projects would be beneficial for tribal members. Efforts to improve infrastructure soon began on tribal lands. Bridges, roads, shelters, clinics, and numerous public works projects were completed by men of many tribes.Of the CCC-ID, the hardworking Comanche member William Karty was employed at the Anadarko Indian Agency as the civilian manager of the CCC-ID camp located near Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. The work provided learning experiences for the men and helped them provide for their families. In 1939, the two Indian Division camps were located at Bull Hollow in eastern Oklahoma and at Fort Cobb in western Oklahoma. The participants worked hard in the program. They also attended classes to learn first aid and to enjoy activities such as swimming or art. They were also taught the basics of arithmetic, writing, and reading. They even had baseball and boxing teams which challenged other work camps.
From an interview about the CCC-ID camps, William Karty recalled the following:
"It was a large camp and because it was supported by the federal government, we had milk, cows, chickens, and a big garden. It was pretty much self-supporting, but that's what they wanted it to be." He added "One of our main projects were shelter belts. They were trees planted in a row in such a manner to eliminate soil erosion." William also pointed out that "They got paid $30 dollars a month but most of it went to their families. They could keep five (dollars) for a show or whatever. They'd go downtown once a week to the show when they'd have a new one. The theatre owner gave them a little break."
The price of admission to the theatre was 25 cents according to William. The established camp was abandoned when World War II began to erupt.
Handsome picture of the respected Comanche elder William Karty. With numerous accomplishments in his lifetime, he is also recognized with helping in the recruitment of the young Comanche men for special duty in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in late 1940. The young men would later become the Comanche Code Talkers of the Second World War who most honorably served in Europe. Photograph courtesy of Okieologist.
