One of the questions I get asked the most is how I control flies in my yard while maintaining a double digit number of dogs. I will walk you through step by step of what works for me. Almost everything can be found on Amazon:
1. Pick up the s**t! Dog s**t attracts flies so pick it up!!! No science there
2. Clean and deodorize dog areas. I use 2 products for this. Wyisiwash works great to clean, sanitize and deodorize hard surfaces. I use it daily to spray down concrete, kennels and whatever else dogs come in contact with. To help deodorize I use Simple Green Outdoor Odor eliminator. I spray this on hard surfaces as well as in the grass and dirt areas of my yard a couple times per week. You must follow the directions for it to work properly but it does work
3. Trap the existing flies. There are many traps that you can buy or make yourself but I have been using the big bag fly traps for years and they are very effective. Warning ⚠️: Flies are not bees, they like s**t not honey! These traps smell like s**t so I recommend putting them off to the side away from areas you might want to actually enjoy hanging out in. The point is to be close enough to attract flies away from ur dogs so don't put them too far out but put them somewhere u can tolerate
4. Repel the flies. I have tried MANY fly repellent sprays over the years and by far the most effective is the Absorbine Ultrashield EX. It's easy to use just shake it up and go. I spray the dogs (don't get it in their eyes or mouth), kennels, tents, around windows and doorways, the areas where the dogs play. EVERYWHERE. Just make sure u don't saturate the surfaces. U want it to dry. This stuff lasts for days and u will see a noticeable difference after a couple days
5. Last thing I use are Spalding Labs Fly Predators. They are live bugs that kill flies by laying eggs in the fly cocoon. The eggs hatch and eat the fly larvae and boom! No more flies. I spread them mainly in the dirt and grass areas and areas around my trash cans. Also around the kennels. They are very effective at keeping the population down
That's it! Hope this helps!!!
