I WAS ABOUT TO SAY "I DO" AT MY WEDDING WHEN MY 13-YEAR-OLD SON SCREAMED, "DAD, WAIT! LOOK AT HER SHOULDER!"
Four years ago, I buried my wife, and with her, a part of myself. But life went on. When I met Carolyn, it felt like I could finally breathe again.

I came home after a long shift, exhausted, only to find my key wouldn't fit the lock. Confused, I tried again. Nothing. Then, I noticed the note taped to the door.
"This is no longer your home. Find somewhere else to stay."
I felt the ground shift beneath me. My hands trembled as I knocked, then pounded. Finally, the door swung open, revealing my husband—and behind him, a woman wrapped in MY silk robe.
"You can't be serious," I whispered, my voice shaking.
"Listen," he smirked, arms crossed. "I've moved on. Mia and I are together now, and we need our space. You can crash somewhere else."
Mia. The same coworker he had sworn was "just a friend." And then she came closer, putting her hands on her hips: "I packed your stuff in boxes. You may pick them up in the garage."
I stared at them, my heart pounding, but then… I smiled inside.
THEY THOUGHT THEY WON—LET IT BE. I sat in my car.
Yes, the house was legally his. But it seemed like my husband forgot one thing. I made a few calls.

When my cousin was getting married, they sent out a "save the date" before the actual invites.
As the date got closer, I messaged her, just checking when the invites were coming so I could RSVP. Honestly, I was worried mine got lost in the mail or something.

MY HUSBAND WENT TO A FRIEND'S WEDDING FOR THREE DAYS, LEAVING ME AND OUR KIDS $20 — HE FELL TO HIS KNEES WHEN HE RETURNED.
So, my husband and I had a huge fight exactly an hour before he was supposed to leave for three days. That Friday, he left work early because his friend invited him to a wedding (I still don't get why I wasn't invited, honestly).
The fight got really intense, and you know what he did? HE LEFT me and the kids with $20 and said, "You'll manage!" Then he walked out and drove off. The thing is, in our family, I take care of the kids and the house while he earns the money. So, I had NO other money at all! AND HE KNEW IT!
