Tonight, the CAT NIGHTS begin! 🐱 A rather obscure old Irish legend said that a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time (August 17), she couldn’t regain her human form. This bit of folklore also gives us the saying, “A cat has nine lives.” 🐱

If you’ve noticed your cat consistently snoozing on its left side, you’re not alone—and it’s not a coincidence.

A new international study has found that about two-thirds of cats prefer sleeping on their left side. Researchers concluded that this behavior may be a clever evolutionary strategy.

When cats sleep on their left side, their left visual field is primed upon waking. Since the left visual field is processed by the right hemisphere of the brain—which excels in threat detection, spatial awareness, and quick reactions—this position likely helps them respond faster to danger or prey. In short, left-side sleeping may allow cats to wake up more alert and ready to flee or pounce.

This subtle behavioral asymmetry shows how evolution may have fine-tuned feline habits to enhance survival. The findings, published in Current Biology, not only deepen our understanding of cat behavior but also highlight how even something as simple as a nap position can be shaped by the brain’s architecture and survival instincts.

This is relatable. Cats are my kind of people! I love all the apathetic roommates I’ve been so very fortunate to share my home with over the years. Dogs are great, for sure. Cats are forever my passion. 😻
