This is a popular time of year to head into the mountains, but I want to remind you to keep your dog safe!

Winter can be challenging for our pets.

Avalanche control produces loud, thunder-like booms. This means you want to be aware of where and when your dog goes outside.

Storms can close roads, meaning you should be prepared to spend extra time in the car with your dog. Have extra food, water, and a food toy ready to go- just in case.

When in the mountains, never leave your dog unattended in the yard of a rental. They may get cold, stuck, or even escape over a fence if the snow is too high!

Lastly- keep an eye on their paws! Not only can crusty snow cut their paws, but soft snow can ball up and rub between their toes, causing irritation. Ice melt is often very irritating, so pay attention to where you walk, or consider booties for your dog.

Have you been to the mountains this year? Tell me about your trip in the comments!

Many of you know that I've been fostering a sweet dog named Hartford.

Today, I want to share an update!

Hartford came to me scared and shut down. She was nervous around people and other dogs. She didn't have any training. She was stressed out.

Today, she is like a different dog. While she still needs to continue her training to build her skills and overcome some of her anxiety, she has made amazing progress. She loves snuggling and playing with my dog Toby. She has learned to trust multiple people and will solicit attention and love from them. It is heartwarming to see how far she has come!

If you want to help a dog, consider fostering a dog yourself, or think about adopting Hartford. Visit my link in bio to learn more about her and begin the adoption process!

Everyone agrees it's important to train your dog.

But have you ever asked yourself *why* it's important to train your dog?

While some people may have you believe that it's so you can have "full control" of your dog, that's not why I train dogs (and their people).

The reason I train dogs and recommend everyone train their dog? To help them thrive in a world not made for them. Our dogs often struggle to live in a world made for people. As their guardians, it's important we help them live more easily with us. While training does allow you to work with your dog and teaches them to listen, it also helps you build trust with your dog. That trust allows them to lean on you when the human world gets a little too weird for them. They trust that what you are asking them to do will keep them safe.

So while you may see videos on the internet that make you go "wow", next time, ask yourself: Is that video safe for the dog? Is that training enhancing the dog's life and helping them thrive? Or is it purely for human enjoyment, or so a person can get likes and shares on social media?

Next time you take time to train your dog, ask yourself: how is this session going to improve my dog's life?

Leash manners make walks more comfortable, and allows you to take your dog out more frequently. A strong recall allows your dog the freedom to run in safe areas. Trick training is fun, entertaining, and bonding.

While it's easy to just "do" what's "normal", I'm asking you to always ask yourself "why" when doing something with your dog.

Picking a harness for your dog should be easy, right?

While you may think you can just walk into any pet store and grab one, that is NOT the case. Unfortunately, anyone can make or sell a harness, and not all harnesses are created equal.

When searching for the best harness for your dog, there are things to keep in mind:
You will want to get a harness that allows your dog natural movement. Not only is this more comfortable for the dog but there is evidence it may be healthier for their joints long term. You also want a harness that is easy to put on your dog. Most dogs dislike having things put over their head, so a harness that you can clip and unclip around their neck versus one that goes over the head may be more comfortable. Lastly, you want a harness that will fit your dog's body type. This means it should be adjustable and close-fitting, not loose or bulky.

One harness I really like is the Balance Harness because it is so adjustable that it fits most dogs comfortably!

Meet Eve, a 4 month rescue who's taking part in one of our puppy programs!

Eve is friendly with all humans, a little nervous around new dogs, and overall a happy girl who loves training time. She's learning how to live with her older dog brother and how to build confidence in new situations. Her parents reached out to get her started off on the right paw, and I'm so glad they did!

How did your dog spend New Year's Eve?

Did they spend the evening sound asleep on the couch, not even noticing the fireworks?

Or did they spend the evening worried, nervous, or flinching at every boom?

If your dog was the latter, then now is the time to consider your plan for the 4th of July. While your dog may still be fearful, with a carefully crafted training program and some help from your veterinarian, you can greatly reduce your dog's stress during 4th of July fireworks.

Oh hi, are you new around here?

If you are, let me introduce myself! I'm Lindsay, owner and trainer at Training With Lindsay.

I have a B.S. in Canine Behavior, am Fear Free Certified, and am an AKC CGC evaluator. As a trainer dedicated to modern training practices, I am always keeping up with what's new in the training world by attending seminars, workshops, and more.

I've completed my Aggression in Dogs Master Course and specialize in helping pet parents work through fear, aggression, and reactivity with their dogs. I believe all pet parents deserve to feel welcome and respected during their training sessions and to know that I am here to support them in their training goals.

In addition to my dog training life, I am recently married, and my husband and share our life with my Golden Retriever Toby. We are also currently fostering a sweet dog named Hartford. If you're looking for a new, sweet companion, visit the link in my bio.

Remember Toby? He is a young, blind English Springer Spaniel. Toby's parents initially reached out for aggressive behavior in the home, as well as general fear and anxiety.

Toby made a lot of progress with training thanks to behavioral medication and his parents following the training plan. When Toby had a flare-up in one of his eyes, the vet recommended removing both eyes. Since that procedure, Toby has almost been a different dog - pain free and able to cope 10x better with stressful situations.

We are now able to advance the skills we've been working on, like 'place', recall, getting in the car, and working through anxiety. He has all of the foundation skills, and without him being in pain, he'll be able to make even more progress.

I can't wait to see where Toby's at by the end of his program!

Does your dog enjoy petting as a reward?

Next time you use petting as a reward, really pay attention to your dog's body language:
🐾 Does their tail droop down?
🐾 Do they avoid eye contact?
🐾 Does your dog become jumpy or mouthy?
🐾 Do they duck their head or lean away from you?

These are some of the signs that your dog is tolerating the petting, and it may not be as rewarding as you think!

Let me know in the comments if you've ever realized a "reward" you were using was actually not quite as rewarding as you thought it was.

Training a dog is not always going to be easy, and I have some tips to help you find success on your training journey!

Tip #1 is Have A Plan. Going into training without a plan is a recipe for frustration and failure, for both you and your dog. You should have a plan for where you are starting, where you want to end, and what the incremental building blocks in the middle should look like.

Tip #2 is to be patient, and Give Yourself Time. While I understand the desire to want something done "right now", that's not how learning and training work. Just like a person needs multiple classes to master something, so do our dogs. And on this same note, please don't expect perfection! Your dog is a living animal.

Tip #3 is to Work With A Professional. It is so easy to get the wrong information or to push your dog into the wrong place without even knowing it. I know you want whats best for your dog, so working with a professional positive reinforcement based trainer will allow you to truly give your dog the best!

If you need some help meeting your goals with your dog training, consider joining my upcoming C.L.A.S.S.! This group manners class helps you and your dog set the foundation for real-life manners in a way that works!

Meet Luffy! (loo-fee)

He is an adolescent Shepherd mix who was adopted from the Humane Society recently. Luffy is nervous around new people, but warms up quickly with a proper introduction. He can be reactive to dogs, enjoys chewing on furniture, and needs help with basic manners and crate training.

Luffy LOVES to learn, and I can't wait to see the transformation with this guy. He grew up in the shelter, so he's going through a lot life changes being in a home for the first time. Stay tuned for Luffy's progress!
