I’ve finally gathered all my thoughts together and wanted to share this in hopes that someone out there can learn from what became one of the most overwhelming nights of my life.
Last Thursday, Jalebi slipped outside through a barely-open door — something that could happen to any pet parent, no matter how careful or cautious we are. He vanished into the dark, and for 17 hours, we were in full panic mode trying to figure out what to do. 💔
We were overwhelmed, Googling nonstop, reading a million conflicting opinions, and trying our best not to fall apart. Losing an indoor-only cat is a unique kind of fear… and I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone.
That’s why I made this post.
Not because we’re experts, but because we just lived it — and I truly believe the steps we took helped bring him home. If this can help even one person stay calm, stay hopeful, and know where to start, then it’s worth sharing a thousand times over.
Jalebi made it home in less than a day, but many cats take much longer. Some wander back after a few days, some after a week or more. The most important thing you can do is create a safe, familiar, scent-filled space for them to return to.
If this ever happens to you, please don’t spiral or blame yourself. It truly does happen to the best of us. Take a breath, follow the steps in this post, and focus on creating an environment that makes it easy for your cat to come home.
You didn’t fail.
Your cat is not “gone forever.”
And you are absolutely not alone. 🫂
