Today, we say goodbye to Jewel, Our Boss Mare. She was more than just a horse — she was smart, sweet, and the kind of soul you could always rely on, whether it was for the youngest camp kid or a last-minute entry in a horse show.
I pulled her from an Oklahoma kill pen on a whim, having only seen one photo. When she arrived, she looked feral, with fly larvae attached to her tear ducts. I still don’t know her history — maybe a broodmare from a ranch auction. But despite her rough past, she radiated kindness and tolerance.
Her "glow up" was nothing short of beautiful. Jewel became a trusted partner to everyone who met her. Whether it was a grandma on a trail ride or a little kid learning the basics, she gave her all, with patience and grace. Though she would make you work for it and ask in just the right way!
As she got older, arthritis and chronic heaves forced her into retirement, but she lived her final year in peace, enjoying a well-deserved life of comfort, fat, and in charge of her herd.
Jewel, we will miss you. Thank you for everything💓💓💓
