San Antonio Zoo, in partnership with Methodist Healthcare System, is tickled pink to celebrate our fluffiest new resident: a baby flamingo!

Just like human babies, flamingo chicks hatch needing lots of care and attention from their parents—staying close for warmth, safety, and plenty of food. While human newborns drink milk, these fluffy gray chicks are fed a special “crop milk” made by both mom and dad! Native to warm, watery habitats, flamingos grow from wobbly-legged fluff balls into graceful pink beauties in just a few months.

Stay tuned on social media to watch these little ones grow, and visit their flamboyant family near the Zoo Entrance!

San Antonio Zoo recently joined forces with Earthwatchand Osa Conservation to lead six San Antonio Zoo teen volunteers ages 13 to 17 on a conservation expedition to Costa Rica’s biodiverse Osa Peninsula. Accompanied by San Antonio Zoo Education Department leadership, participants spent a week living and working like field biologists while contributing to active conservation research.

The group was trained on-site in various fieldwork projects, including watershed conservation and bird diversity monitoring, amphibian surveying, bat box inspections, and forest vegetation studies. Throughout the expedition, they woke up to the sounds of Howler Monkeys and spotted wildlife such as macaws, toucans, tamanduas, coatis, and agoutis. They also witnessed olive ridley sea turtles hatching, gaining firsthand insight into rainforest biodiversity and the importance of habitat protection.
