Animal Defense League of Texas Established in 1934, the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL) is the oldest no-kill shelter in South Texas.

The Animal Defense League was established in 1934 by a group of individuals, “for the prevention of cruelty to animals; to promote kind and humane treatment of animals; to aid and assist the enforcement of laws enacted for the prevention of animal cruelty.”

ADL began with just a few makeshift chicken-wire cages in response to a need to shelter stray and injured dogs and cats in the San Antonio a

rea. Along with providing basic shelter and care, the emphasis has always been placed on adopting animals to homes where they will receive loving care and attention for the rest of their lives. The Animal Defense League is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We rely on grants, individual donors, and corporate support.

Soniya’s birthday wish was to spend time with kittens and puppies, and her family made that wish come true by surprising her with a trip to the Animal Defense League! 🥳

This sweet family drove in from Houston to celebrate her special day with us and spend time with our pets. They even kindly donated some cat toys for our furry friends to enjoy! 🫶

Alumni Update ✨

Meet Darcy, a Shepherd/Husky mix who is loving life with her fur-ever family! She was adopted in 2021 by a kind, fun-filled family, and she could not be happier. She loves her pup sibling, Cooper; her two kitty siblings, Nala and Jasper; and her two tiny human siblings, who love her right back. 🥰

Her adoptive mom says, "My oldest son begs for her to stay in his room with him because he always says, 'Darcy is just my best friend'. She was truly the perfect addition to our family." 🥹

Thank you for sharing Darcy's story with us! Nothing makes us happier than hearing about our babies' happy endings. 🫶
