Dreaming of your own underwater oasis? 🌊 Setting up your first aquarium is easier than you think! With a few helpful tips and the right steps, you’ll create a peaceful home for your fish in no time. Let’s dive into the basics to get you started!

# fishstories How to Set Up Your First Aquarium – Easy Steps
1. Choose the Right Tank Size
Beginners often start with a 10-20 gallon tank.
Bigger tanks are easier to maintain (more water = more stability).
2. Pick a Good Location

Avoid direct sunlight (causes algae).
Place on a sturdy, level surface near an outlet.
3. Rinse Everything

Rinse the tank, substrate (gravel/sand), and decorations with plain water (no soap!).
4. Add Substrate & Decorations

Add 1–2 inches of gravel or sand.
Place rocks, plants, or ornaments (Make sure to leave room for the fish to swim).
5. Install Equipment

Filter – Keeps water clean.
Heater (if tropical fish) – Keeps water warm.
Thermometer – Monitor temperature.
Light – Helps fish and plants thrive.
6. Add Water

Fill the tank with dechlorinated water for freshwater systems (use a water conditioner). For saltwater, ask for guidance!
7. Start the Cycle (Very Important!)

Run the filter and heater for a few days.
Begin the nitrogen cycle (you can use a starter bacteria product).
Test water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

After cycling, SLOWLY introduce a few hardy fish. You'll be well on your way!
