My name is Stephanie, Certified Dog Trainer and Owner of Pup Pup & Away. Boy, do I have a story for you! I always knew I wanted to work with animals, especially pets, but I thought it was going to be in the veterinary field. My first job was as a receptionist at a small animal hospital. I loved the small setting and even got to sit in on and watch a few surgeries. I began attending Texas A&M in 20

07 with vet school as my goal. Well, did you know chemistry is hard!? With my GPA not being of vet school standard, I turned to a degree in Animal Behavior which opened my eyes to a whole new world of careers in the pet industry. I began working at a facility that offered boarding, daycare and veterinary services. I realized I had an eye for detail and an act for caring for other people's pets and fell in love with this new calling. Graduation in 2011 brought me back home to San Antonio. I worked at another daycare and boarding facility honing in and sharpening my pet hospitality skills. In September 2012, I moved to Houston with my long term boyfriend and began working at Peace Love & Dogs. PLD became my home for the next 4 years and taught me so much about myself as a person and as a professional. I started in the daycare department supervising groups of playing dogs like in previous jobs but this time learning and focusing on how behavior affects play. Peace Love & Dogs also held many group classes by Stephanie Bennett, CPDT-KSA and I got to sit in and observe. I feel in love with a new passion: TRAINING. With the help of Stephanie, my other boss, Anna, and lots of dog books I began teaching my own puppy classes in July 2013 and have not stopped training. I expanded my class resume to include Puppy I and II, Puppy Socialization and Adult Basic Obedience I and II. I also assisted in Nosework, Tricks, and CGC classes. I became a certified trainer in October 2014. The experiences I gained, clients I met and best friends I've made at PLD are priceless and irreplaceable but home was calling me back. In February 2017, we made the move back to San Antonio and I began business as Pup Pup & Away! I currently offer private in-home training lessons, daily dog walks, and daily as well as overnight pet sitting services. If you've got a pet, I'd love to meet them! 🎓 Is your dog ready to earn their AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title?

Our next Canine Good Citizen Class starts August 6, and it’s designed to prepare you and your dog for one of the most recognized certifications in the dog world.

Over this 6-week course, we’ll work through all 10 AKC CGC test items, including:
🐾 Loose leash walking
🐾 Coming when called
🐾 Stay
🐾 Politely passing other dogs
🐾 Accepting friendly strangers
🐾 And more!

🌳 In Week 5, we’ll take class to a nearby park to practice these skills in real-world environments with everyday distractions. Then in Week 6, we’ll administer the official AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Pass, and your dog earns their CGC certification! 🎉

⚠️ This is NOT a beginner class. Dogs should already have a reliable understanding of foundational cues like sit and down before enrolling.

The most accurate sound for a dog behaviorist 😂

But jokes aside… if your favorite dog trainer is regularly getting bitten on camera we may have different definitions of “expert.” 👀 I thought it was supposed to be a whisper, not a scream for help!

Dog bites are not proof that a dog is “dominant,” “disrespectful,” or needs to be shown who’s boss. And intentionally pushing a scared, stressed, or defensive dog past their threshold until they bite only to punish them for biting isn’t behavior modification. It’s creating the problem and then getting mad at the dog for responding to it.

Well-educated dog trainers and behavior professionals spend A LOT of time learning canine body language, understanding aggression, assessing bite risk, and creating environments where dogs don’t feel like biting is their only option.

Can bites happen? Absolutely. We work with animals. But we shouldn’t be MAKING dogs bite us with stupid decisions.

It’s no lie that July 4-6th are the busiest days for animal shelters to pick dogs up off the street. Fireworks can be scary not just because of the noise but because of a dog’s lack of understanding of the concept.

If you have a puppy who will be experiencing fireworks for the first time, start training now!
Play firework sounds while your puppy eats or plays. Start low then slowly increase the volume (protip: play the sounds from your TV or loud speaker). The goal isn’t to scare your puppy, but to introduce them to the noise without alarm.

If your dog has already shown signs of concern over fireworks, get stocked up on natural calming remedies.
CBD, Rescue Remedy, calming herbal blends are some of my favorite suggestions as a certified canine nutritionist!

I really, really love what I do. 🐾💛

I love helping dogs feel safer, more confident, and more understood.

I love helping their people feel less overwhelmed and more connected to the dog in front of them.

I love watching the little lightbulb moments happen -when a puppy starts to figure it out, when a reactive dog takes a deep breath, when a family realizes progress is actually happening.

And I love that Pup Pup & Away has become more than just a place for dog training, daycare, and boarding. It has become a community built around loving dogs well.

Whether we’ve worked together in person, your dog has spent time with us at PPA, or you’re just here following along through a screen, I hope you can feel how much heart goes into this work.

I hope my passion shines through in the way we care, the way we teach, the way we advocate, and the way we celebrate every dog for who they are.

Because this work means so much to me.

And getting to be even a small part of your dog’s story is something I’ll never take for granted. 💛
