📢 Vacation Notice 🏔️🐾

Just a heads up that Peak Canine Care will be closed September 9th–16th while I take a little working vacation!

During that time I will not be accepting:
• Boarding
• Board & Trains
• Private Lessons

Dicey and I are headed to Florence, Colorado to compete in a JRTCA trial, and we’re planning to spend the rest of the trip soaking up the mountain views, hiking, and enjoying everything Colorado has to offer.

If you’re needing boarding, training, or a private lesson around those dates, please reach out soon so we can get you scheduled before I leave or after I get back.

Thank you all for your understanding! I’m looking forward to coming home refreshed, making great memories with Dicey, and hopefully bringing back some ribbons too!

Now that temperatures are ramping up across Texas and surrounding states, I wanted to put out a reminder about dogs and vehicle safety.

Just this summer, I’ve already heard of two dogs dying after being left in hot vehicles. Both belonged to trainers who left a working dog in the vehicle while training another dog at that location.

And look, I get it. As trainers, we have to be smart about how we transport and work dogs while still making a living. But if your vehicle isn’t equipped with multiple fail safes—and I mean your backup has a backup—you shouldn’t be leaving dogs unattended in it. Period.

Fans fail. AC units fail. Batteries die. Apps disconnect. Temperature monitors lose signal. Technology is great until it isn’t.

Last year during the hottest part of summer, I would often only take one client dog at a time out into town. Not because it was the most efficient option, but because it meant that dog had my full attention and wasn’t sitting unattended in a vehicle while I worked another dog.

The reality is that every system has a failure point. If your entire safety plan depends on a piece of equipment working perfectly 100% of the time, that’s a problem.

Before leaving a dog in a vehicle, ask yourself: What happens if the AC quits? What happens if the battery dies? What happens if the alert doesn’t come through? What happens if I don’t see the notification right away?

If any of those scenarios could put a dog’s life at risk, it’s time to rethink the setup.

No training session, errand, or convenience is worth a dog’s life. Equipment fails. Technology fails. Don’t let a dog pay the price for it.

With that said, what temperature monitoring systems is everyone using these days?

I previously used Waggle and honestly wasn’t a fan. For me, any monitor would need to use cellular service, have reliable coverage throughout most of the Texas Hill Country, and allow for repeated or unlimited notifications if temperatures reach unsafe levels. Maybe I’m asking too much, but I’d love to hear what everyone is having success with.

Meet Echo the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog! 🐾

Today, Echo joined me for a training field trip to Bass Pro Shops as part of her preparation for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test! Public outings are a great way to practice polite manners, focus around distractions, and build confidence in new environments.

The AKC Canine Good Citizen program evaluates 10 essential skills that demonstrate a dog’s good manners in everyday life, including loose leash walking, greeting strangers politely, and remaining calm around distractions. It’s one of the most recognized foundation titles in the dog training world!

❤️ Swissy Fun Fact:
Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are one of Switzerland’s oldest breeds and were originally used as draft dogs, pulling carts loaded with milk and farm goods. Despite their size, Swissys are known for being gentle, affectionate, and deeply devoted to their families.

Friendly notice from your dog trainer who plans way too far ahead:

March 11–14, 2027 is officially unavailable for boarding and private lessons because I’ll be busy living out a dream I set for myself years ago.

Suede and I will be in Oklahoma competing at the National Agility Championship after officially qualifying for the event! 🇺🇸

Yes, I realize it’s only June 2026 and I’m already blocking off dates for March 2027. No, I have no regrets. If you’ve met me, you know I operate on dog trial calendars, not normal people calendars.

I’m incredibly proud of my little poodle and everything we’ve accomplished together. Qualifying for NAC was one of my biggest goals, and now we get to go represent Texas on the national stage.

Now excuse me while I spend the next nine months alternating between being excited and wondering if I should have started packing already.

As a trainer, one of the most valuable tools I have isn’t equipment—it’s my dogs.

Having stable, neutral, and confident demo dogs makes a huge difference when working with clients who are struggling. Whether it’s a dog that’s unsure of new environments, lacking confidence, or working through reactivity toward other dogs, the right demo dog helps create controlled, safe, and productive learning moments.

A solid demo dog can:
• Show appropriate social behavior without escalating
• Help build confidence in insecure dogs
• Provide clear, consistent feedback for reactive dogs
• Allow setups that simply wouldn’t be possible otherwise

These dogs aren’t just “good dogs”—they’re highly trained, thoughtful partners who understand their job and can handle pressure without falling apart. That kind of stability is something I never take for granted.

Public access isn’t just about obedience—it’s about a dog that can think, recover, and stay engaged no matter the environment. Luna has already shown she’s capable of settling in and stepping into work mode once she understands the picture… now we’re just sharpening those skills.

Abby & Jazz living their BEST lives 🙌🐾

These two used to take full advantage of their property… aka running off whenever they felt like it 😅 Their owners wanted a way to give them freedom without losing accountability, and that’s exactly what we worked on in private lessons.

We introduced e-collar training the right way—clear communication, fair expectations, and tons of consistency from their owners.

This is what it’s all about—freedom with boundaries.

🌧️ Rainy day adventures > skipping them

I know it’s super tempting to stay inside when it’s raining (trust me, I get it 😅), but honestly… rainy walks are some of the best outings you can give your dog.

Everything smells stronger, the environment feels different, and your dog gets way more mental stimulation than they would on a normal walk. It’s basically enrichment without you having to do anything extra.

And here’s a big bonus—there are usually way less triggers out. Fewer dogs, fewer people, fewer bikes… which makes it such a good opportunity for dogs that get overwhelmed easily. You can actually have a calmer, more successful walk.

Plus, dogs that only go out in “perfect” weather tend to struggle when things aren’t ideal. Letting them experience different conditions builds confidence and creates a more well-rounded dog.

So yeah… you might get a little wet and a little muddy, but your dog is going to come home way more fulfilled (and probably crash hard after 😂).

Rainy days don’t have to mean no walk. Throw on a jacket and go let your dog sniff the world.
