Calaveras Veterinary Clinic will be closed this year from December the 25th, to January 5th.

We will have folk coming by to feed the clinic animals, but there will be no medication or services available for the duration. Please plan accordingly.

There was a feral kitten that tested positive for Rabies in the unincorporated area of Pioneer. The kitten had come into contact with a skunk. 

This is a reminder that rabies in wildlife continue to pose a risk to pets and people.

If exposed to potentially rabid wildlife, pets should get a booster rabies shot within 48 hours. Indoor animals should also receive rabies vaccinations, as bats can be discovered by pets in the home.

SINGLE COMPREHENDED WORDS, such as Sit, Settle, Shush, Steady (slow down), Chewtoy, Toilet etc., are far more effective than any aversive stimulus — not only do they immediately curtail specific undesirable behaviors but also, they get the dog back on track by CUING THE ONE SPECIFIC (incompatible) DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR.
For examples: If your dog jumps up, say, "Sit". If your dog is running Agility in the living room, say, "Settle". Barking? Say, "Shush". Forging or pulling on leash? — "Steady", Chewing your iPhone? — "Chewtoy", About to p*e indoors? — "Toilet", etc., etc., etc.
If you find yourself saying Sit, Settle, and Shush a lot, try to appreciate life from your dog's point of view and occasionally instruct them to Hug on cue, to play Tag or Jazz-up indoors to let off steam on rainy days, or cue a Barkathon in the car, or a Howlathon on a remote trail.
