Calaveras County Animal Services Calaveras County Animal Services. Assisting the community through public outreach, education and awareness. (209) 754-6509

Animal Services' main responsibility is, via licensing, ensuring all dogs have current vaccinations to help prevent the spread of rabies. We strongly encourage spaying and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation. We strive to find forever homes for the animals brought into our shelter, and we work closely with several shelters and rescues to transfer some of our critters to other locations so they

can find a forever home there. We are extremely proud of our high rate of good outcomes! We also offer microchipping for $15, and all animals adopted from us leave here with a registered microchip.

Simon says: Adopt, Don't Shop. β€οΈπŸ™β€οΈ And why not adopt when your Calaveras County Animal Shelter is chock full of potential best buddies? Here is a case in point, shelter friends. Meet Simon! πŸ˜βœ¨πŸ’—

This sweet-tempered boy was found straying on Main Street in San Andreas. The poor lil' guy was sooooo scared at first, 🫣 flattening himself on the ground whenever anyone approached him, even belly-crawling along the ground when we got him out on leash, too scared to stand up straight. 😭 He seemed to be trying to become extra small and avoid notice. One can't help but notice, however, how adorable he is 🀩 and want to give him lots of loving attention. So we have done just that, and now Simon feels happier and more secure. We love seeing him slowly shed his anxiety and relax with us. πŸ₯°

Submissive with other dogs, Simon has not once reacted negatively to any of them, even when they got all aggro up in his face. πŸ‘Œ He just stays friendly, wanting to invite play and give kisses. πŸŒŸπŸ’• He's pretty good on the leash, though he'll pull a bit when he gets a whiff of something extra enticing to sniff. He's a smart boy, and we predict he will thrive with leash training and other engaging work. πŸŽ“ Queensland Heelers (another name for the Australian Cattle Dog breed) are energetic, intelligent, and bond strongly with their people. An active lifestyle with interesting things to learn would suit Simon well. πŸƒπŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

Simon still flattens to the ground if he gets startled; 😬 he's working through his anxiety, getting more confident all the time. He's always up for snuggles and scritches, he loves massages, and he was very good for his bath. πŸ’¦ His beautiful, velvety soft coat and his compact size make for pleasant snuggle time. πŸ€—

Simon appears to be housetrained. We take him out to potty first thing in the mornings, since he keeps his kennel very clean. Though we can't make promises he will be accident-free as he settles into a new home, we'd guess he will keep up his tidy habits. πŸ€ŽπŸ’©πŸ€Ž

Simon is neutered and can go home with you right away. We do not have info on his attitude toward cats 🐱 at this time. A meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. 🀎🐢🀎

We have another sweet doggo to introduce to you, shelter friends. Meet Ritas! πŸ‘‹β€οΈ This lovely girl was found straying on Calaveritas Road and ended up in the pet pokey. She was covered in stickers and sadly very shut down. πŸ₯Ί Our hearts hurt to think what she must have gone through being lost and alone. Once our dog whisperer staff and volunteers started plying her with loving attention, though, it did not take long for Ritas to realize she would be safe and cared for. She has come out of her frightened shell and is making friends, both two-legged and four. πŸ«ΆπŸ˜πŸ‘

Ritas is friendly to most dogs. πŸ’• If they react negatively toward her, she will loudly bark back. πŸ“£ Her general policy seems to be curiosity and interest in other dogsβ€”unless they are jerks in her face. Then she stands up for herself, but not in a ragey way. More like an assertive, "Yo, dude, I was just saying hi!" kind of way. 🀨

Our initial bathing sesh πŸ› with Ritas was apparently greatly appreciated. She actually seemed to enjoy it, calmly accepting the loving ministrations of volunteers washing her up and removing all the stickers from her fur. 😌 She also enjoys being brushed and petted and loved on by her trusted peeps, for whom she'll happily flip over on her back to facilitate proper brushing/petting/scritches in all the important spots. πŸ₯°

As you may know, our volunteers test all our dogs for behavioral issues, like resource guarding and sensitivities to touch. Ritas passed her evaluations perfectly. 🌟 She still takes a moment to feel at ease when meeting new people, but warms up quickly. Once she settles into a home, we'd guess her confidence will blossom. πŸ’“πŸ‘

As Ritas has begun to feel less anxious and more apt to play, it has been discovered that she is a passionate ball player, πŸ₯Ž excitedly chasing the ball and (mostly) bringing it back. She does jump up for hugs and attention and when excited, so care should be taken around small children. πŸ‘ˆ

Ritas keeps her inner space tidy. Though we can't make promises, we'd guess she will be easy to housetrain. πŸ€ŽπŸ’©πŸ€Ž

Ritas will need to be spayed before she can go home with you. We do not have info on her attitude toward cats 🐱 at this time. A meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. 🀎🐢🀎

MY CURRENT FAVORITE:

Kolleen and Astrid:

I’ve always loved animals, so to spend my time volunteering to walk dogs is the perfect opportunity for me. It’s so rewarding to make their days a bit brighter until they find their forever homes, and seeing the progress they make is fulfilling. The people I’ve met while volunteering here are some of the best, making an incredible difference for these dogs.

Astrid first arrived severely emaciated, with ear infections and flea allergies. But watching her transformation over the past few months has been astonishing! She is so happy and healthy now. She gives you her attention on walks, and is quite food-motivated, making it so easy to train her. Everyone knows her, and everyone loves her!

***UPDATE: Cricket, the all black pup, has been adopted!! Down to two now… πŸ₯³

We are down from nine to only three female puppies still available for adoption! Now at about 10-11 weeks old, these Lab mix cuties are getting big fast. πŸ–€πŸ€πŸ–€ We'd really like them to grow up in loving homes, not the shelter. All three are spayed and can go home with you right away. Come on in tomorrow, Saturday, 10AM-4PM, and meet your new lil' snuggle nugget! Please share to help these adorable girls find their people sooner rather than later. βœ¨πŸ™βœ¨

As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. 🀎🐢🀎

We can guess what some of you might be thinking, πŸ€” shelter friends, whilst gazing at this dog's vast, amazing face: "That there is a junkyard dawg! Run for your life!" 😱 We do understand, but please rest assured, our dear Yeezy wants to be a lover not a fighter. Sure, he would look pretty fly with a chunky rapper's chain or a thick, spiked collar around his neck. πŸ˜† That's just not his style, though. This beefy love buddy could possibly double as a comfortable ottoman, but he'd rather be in your lap. Yep, he will crawl right into your lap if you let himβ€”all 70+ pounds of him. πŸ’˜

Yeezy likes most of the other dogs we've introduced him to, though he doesn't like Billy at all (also available for adoption), another powerful male Pit Bull. 😬 Male rivalry is not uncommon in dogs, of course. Yeezy seems selective, though, as he did make friends with Norman, another large Pit, who is short like himself. Perhaps he is jealous of Billy's superior height? We jest, kinda, but who knows? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

On the other hand, Yeezy likes all the humans he meets. πŸ₯° He loves to be petted and hugged and massaged. He walks calmly on leash. Imagine walking this boy around your 'hood! You'd never be bothered by another soul. Like, ever. πŸ˜‚ Remember the scene in The Princess Bride when giant Fezzik hollers, "Everybody MOOOVE!" to clear the crowd for Inigo? Your walks would probably be like that. Yeezy isn't on the Brute Squad, however. He's too sweet for that stuff. β˜ΊοΈπŸ’•

Yeezy is indeed a sweetheart, but awareness should be maintained in handling him, because this boy is STRONG. πŸ’ͺ Fezzik would be impressed. "I don't even exercise," Yeezy would probably tell him proudly. But seriously, if Yeezy were to take it into his very, very large head to bolt while on leash, he could pull an inattentive handler *beep* over teakettle. Experienced handlers will probably be most comfortable walking him. πŸ‘

We do believe this very affectionate doggo has the potential to make a wonderful pet for a loving home. 🏑🫢

Yeezy keeps his inner space tidy. Though we can't make promises, with his easy going personality we'd guess he will be easy to housetrain. πŸ€ŽπŸ’©πŸ€Ž

Yeezy is already neutered; he can go home with you right away. We do not have info on his attitude toward cats 🐱 at this time. As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. 🀎🐢🀎
