Calaveras County Animal Services Calaveras County Animal Services. Assisting the community through public outreach, education and awareness. (209) 754-6509

Animal Services' main responsibility is, via licensing, ensuring all dogs have current vaccinations to help prevent the spread of rabies. We strongly encourage spaying and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation. We strive to find forever homes for the animals brought into our shelter, and we work closely with several shelters and rescues to transfer some of our critters to other locations so they

can find a forever home there. We are extremely proud of our high rate of good outcomes! We also offer microchipping for $15, and all animals adopted from us leave here with a registered microchip.

Shelter friends, we are excited to have gotten past the shelter closure and to be back sharing wonderful, adoptable dogs with you! ๐Ÿฅณ Now that we are back at it full swing, we'd love to get some adoptions happening pronto. **Sharing** our bios helps immensely. Thank you! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

That said, we hope you don't mind us peppering your FB feed with adorable doggos as we ramp back up. If you liked our most recent bio of Mary Ann, we're guessing you'll enjoy today's purty girl: Meet Wanda, Mary Ann's sister! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Watch out, though; Wanda's sweet heart shines like a light through her eyes, making her veeeery hard to resist. You've been warned! ๐Ÿ˜˜ It's too late for us. We have fallen in love with her bright spirit and gentle manner. Luckily, Wanda is cool with us fawning over her; she loves to be loved, soaking up rubs, scritches and snuggles. ๐Ÿ’—

Morning walkies with Wanda are truly a pleasure. Once some initial excited wiggles are expelled, she strolls along peaceably on the leash, paying lots of attention to her handlerโ€”especially if she knows they have cookies in their pockets. Wanda loves treats and takes them with a gentle mouth. She thoroughly enjoyed snarfing up her extra delicious food test meal, but showed zero signs of resource guarding, passing her behavior tests perfectly. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ’•

Unlike Mary Ann's horizontal airplane wing ears, Wanda's ears are fully deployed uprightly. โœจ We think they're adorable, and also love gazing into her beautiful golden eyes. She gazes calmly back, usually with a smile on her adorable mug, and melts our hearts. ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿคฉ

Much like Mary Ann, Wanda is very affectionate and wants a whole lot of contact with her people. She does jump up for attention, though she's pretty gentle about it. Honestly, we kinda like her hugs. We'd guess she'll be easy to train out of that habit, but older children only in the home may be best. ๐Ÿ‘

Wanda seems to do great with all other dogs, though to be extra safe we are still not allowing the dogs to interact closely. Soon we hope to be as sure as we can be that it's safe to start having companion walks and play dates again. If we discover any issues with Wanda's canine relational skills, we'll update this bio. At this point, our assessment is that Wanda will make some lucky adopter a wonderfully affectionate companion. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Wanda is spayed and can go home with you right away. She keeps her inner kennel tidy. Though we can't make guarantees, she may be easy to house train. ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸคŽ We do not have information about her attitude toward cats at this time. ๐Ÿˆ

As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿถ๐ŸคŽ

That said, we hope you don't mind us peppering your FB feed with adorable doggos as we ramp back up. Here's another one for you to oooo and aaawww at: Please say howdy to Mary Ann! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Mary Ann is a highly energetic dog, perpetually happy and excited about life. When offered a game of fetch, she enthusiastically leapt after the ball but then was comically puzzled about what to do when she caught up with it. Regardless, she got in some very cute zoomies. ๐Ÿ˜†

Speaking of cute, may we take a moment to squee over those ears? With their deployment at permanent half-mast, Mary Ann appears ready for takeoff at any moment. And get a peek at those sassy, polka-dotted socks. So fashionable! โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜

Brimming with saucy affection, Mary Ann is a vigorous dog with potential to be a delightful companion for an active owner or family. Because she jumps for attention and is quite strong, a home with older children only may be best. ๐Ÿค”

Speaking of jumping, we observed Mary Ann get impressively close to scaling a chain link fence in one of our play areas. She didn't, and perhaps she couldn't have gotten all the way over, but if left unsupervised for an extended period she might try harder. Adequate containment will likely be important to keep this athletic girl safe. ๐Ÿ‘ˆ ๐Ÿ’—

Speaking of jumping again, Mary Ann is very affectionate and adores snuggles and scritches. She will jump right into your lapโ€”all fifty-two pounds of her, with or without an invite. In general, Mary Ann will benefit from training, ahem, including leash training. ๐Ÿ˜†โฃ๏ธ

Mary Ann seems to do great with all other dogs, though to be extra safe we are still not allowing any dogs to interact closely. Starting next week, we will be as sure as we can be that the outbreak is in our rearview and we'll start having companion walks and play dates again. If we discover any issues with Mary Ann's canine relational skills, we'll update this bio. At this point, our assessment is that Mary Ann will make the right adopter a wonderfully affectionate companion. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Mary Ann is spayed and can go home with you right away. She keeps her kennel tidy. Though we can't make guarantees, she may already have some house training under her belt. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸคŽ We do not have information about her attitude toward cats at this time. ๐Ÿˆ

Today, we'd like you to meet handsome Brother. Isn't he a looker? ๐Ÿคฉ

Brother is a member of a large group of Malinois/Shepherd dogs to arrive at the shelter from one location. Kept in kennels and crates for most of their lives, these dogs have lacked appropriate developmental and healthy living experiences. ๐Ÿ˜” They were a bit undernourished, as well. Yet, although they were initially fearful in the chaotic shelter, they have proven to be quite sweet-tempered and easy to handle, allowing us to coax them into friendship with multiple new humans as they've become more comfortable. Additionally, they all seem to get along great with other dogs. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

At two years old, Brother is one of the more grown up of the Malinois bunch. It shows. He does share the general attributes of the group: quiet, sweet-tempered, affectionate, and athletic, but with less manic puppitude than the youngsters. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅฐ

Oh, did we mention handsome?? ๐Ÿ˜ The whole group is seriously blessed with beauty, and Brother is no exception. We love the striking combo of those hypnotizing amber eyes paired with his dark, sleek coat. The Shepherd in his genetics shows in the darker coloring of his coat. His calmer personality added to his beauty equals a winning package. โœจโค๏ธโœจ

Pleasant on leash for his morning walkies, Brother is a pretty confident dog, alert and interested in the goings on around him without flipping out about things. He would benefit from leash training since he sometimes pulls. He is enthusiastic about treats and takes them with a gentle mouth. So far, he knows how to sit for treats; being highly treat-motivated and smart, we'd guess that he'll be fun to train to do much more. He does like to please, and will roll onto his back for belly rubs for his favorite handlers. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’–

Brother, like all the Malinois gang, seems to do very well with other dogs. However, to be extra safe we are not yet allowing any close interaction between any of the dogs. This coming week, we will be as sure as we can be that the outbreak is fully in our rearview and will start having companion walks and play dates again. If we discover any issues with Brother's canine relational skills, we'll update his bio. At this point, our assessment is that he will make some lucky family a loving, head-turning companion. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Brother is neutered and can go home with you right away. He keeps his kennel fairly tidy; though we can't make guarantees, he may be easy to housetrain. ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸคŽ NO cats. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿˆ

That said, we hope you don't mind us peppering your FB feed with adorable doggos as we ramp back up. Here is another one: sweet lil' Tater Bug. Seriously, how cute is this boy? He is such a comedian, he even gets his own special movie. ๐ŸŽฌ

Tater Bug (a name we can't help but enjoy saying) has a sweet disposition combined with a boundless supply of wiggliness. He is a busy, busy little dude. Though he's estimated to be two years old, he's got very puppy-ish ways about him. He loves attentionโ€”and will jump up for it, so be ready for a ton of hugs. Like, really a lot. We're working on that, but a home with older children only may be best. He's also mouthy (have we sold you on him yet? ๐Ÿ˜†), but in a sort of wide open, tongue-lolling way, not actually biting. He doesn't clamp down, but rather, shall we say, lightly moistens many parts of us as we handle him. ๐Ÿ’ฆ ๐Ÿ˜

Even as we dab the slobber off our various parts, we can't be upset about Tater's antics. How could we? Tater Bug is too sweet and too full of joyful zaniness, with those bright eyes and majestic ears that could probably pull in a signal from Mars. We also dig his handy, medium size. Very portable. ๐Ÿ˜˜

Tater seems to do well with other dogs; in fact, he whines and wants to get close whenever he sees a potential doggo friend. However, to be extra safe we are not yet allowing any close interaction between any of the dogs. This coming week, we will be as sure as we can be that the outbreak is in our rearview and will start having companion walks and play dates again. If we discover any issues with Tater's canine relational skills, we'll update his bio. At this point, our assessment is that he will make the right, fun-loving family a sweetly silly petโ€”and probably be the star of their very own living room comedy show. ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Tater Bug is neutered and is ready to go home with you. He keeps his kennel tidy. Though we can't make guarantees, he seems to be nearly housetrained already. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸคŽ We do not have information about his attitude toward cats at this time. ๐Ÿˆ

Thank you! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

That said, we hope you don't mind us peppering your FB feed with adorable doggos as we ramp back upโ€”such this handsome feller, Bubba! Hubba hubba, we love Bubba! ๐Ÿคฉ Talk about a love bug, Bubba is a super affectionate, exuberant dog who wants, oh, nothing much, only aaaaaallll the hugs, scritches, and kisses he can get; basically loads of contact with his human friends. Laptime? Oh yes, please. Be aware that he will jump up for attentionโ€”and he's a strong boy. Thus, a home with older children only is recommended. ๐Ÿ’•

Bubba did excellent on his behavior tests, unbothered by us messing with him and his food bowl, even though he wolfed up the special test meal with intense gusto. He's pretty good on leash, too, though untrained. He likes treats, which he takes with a gentle mouth. As you can see in the video, where he is learning a new trick, he is game to work for treats. He's also enthusiastically learning to play fetch. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ‘

If you were to happen across Bubba, you would likely find him in his standard mode, living his best life no matter where he finds himself, sporting a huge, tongue-lolling grin on his big ol' face and begging for love from everybody. ๐Ÿ’– He seems to do well with other dogs, though to be extra safe we are still not allowing any dogs to interact closely. Starting next week, we will be as sure as we can be that the outbreak is in our rearview and we'll start having companion walks and play dates again. If we discover any issues with Bubba's canine relational skills, we'll update his bio. At this point, our assessment is that Bubba will make the right, fun-loving family a wonderful goofball of a pet. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Bubba will need to be neutered before going home with you. He keeps his inner kennel tidy. Though we can't make guarantees, he may be easy to housetrain. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐ŸคŽ We do not have information about his attitude toward cats at this time. ๐Ÿˆ

Thank you! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

This pretty young lady is Penny, another member of a large group of Malinois/Shepherd dogs to arrive at the shelter from one location. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Pretty Penny is as sweet as she is beautiful. ๐Ÿคฉ She is very affectionate and wants lots of contact with her human friends. When you sit down, she'll climb right up into your lap for snuggles (and to check your pockets for cookies). In fact, she's a super hugger; since she does tend to jump up for those hugs (and kisses when she can get them), a home with only older children may be best. ๐Ÿค”

As marvelously graceful and athletic as Malinois can be, which Penny certainly is, she is a bit of dweeb ๐Ÿค“ on leash, wandering away then coming back and tangling up in our legs. She's more of a flibbity jibbit than a rough puller, though, which is nice. She still has some fearfulness around cars. Basically still a pup at just nine months, she's still a youngster and will likely mellow and grow in confidence as she matures. With consistent leash training, as well, she'll likely make a lovely companion for walkies and active living. ๐Ÿฅฐ

We are just getting to know these Malinois and gradually finding out more about their individual personalities; we will update our bios with any significant discoveries about their particular natures. However, we can say that with their sweetness and Malinois and German Shepherd heritage, they have good promise as smart, active, loving companions. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•

Penny has been spayed and can go home with you right away. She is not yet house trained. ๐Ÿ’ฉ A home with NO cats is recommended for Penny. ๐Ÿˆ

As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿถ๐ŸคŽ
