Dear Residents of Magoffin County,
I want to advise everyone that the forecasted heavy rainfall beginning on February 15, 2025, poses a significant threat of severe flooding in our county. Governor Andy Beshear has already declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth as of February 14, 2025, in anticipation of the impending storm.
Considering the potential for extensive damage to our infrastructure, including roadways, bridges, and personal property, and in order to prioritize the safety of all individuals, I have also declared a State of Emergency for Magoffin County. Our local Emergency Operations Plan has been fully activated.
Earlier today, I, in collaboration with our Emergency Management Director, convened a meeting with the sheriff and leaders from the city, school district, ambulance service, and local nursing home to ensure preparedness for the anticipated flooding. Subsequently, we met with the rescue squad captain and held discussions with all fire chiefs to allocate resources and personnel to address any potential requirements.
I strongly encourage all residents to remain vigilant, stay informed about weather alerts, and be ready to implement necessary safety measures. Your well-being is our utmost concern, and we are committed to minimizing the impact of this situation to the best of our abilities.
As always, remember “turn around don’t drown!”
Please share and be safe Magoffin County!
