If you don't have 100% verbal control of your dog, please don't walk them off-leash in on-leash areas!! It's just inconsiderate.

Let's talk: Socialization!

It's not just about your dog's behavior around other dogs or people.

From the moment your dog is born it's being exposed to the environment.

The goal is to create positive associations with things like: Surprise movements, bangs, screeches, vehicles of all shapes and sounds, hats, men, women, children, um...I think you get the idea...

The secret to success with any training is...*drum roll*...

SETTING THEM UP TO SUCEED!!

In just 48 hours Buddy has learned that the kitchen is off limits. We did this first by setting up gates that he cannot jump over and maintaining observation at all times (and when we can't he goes in the kennel). Calling him/distracting away from the kitchen gate and rewarding when he would take his attention off the kitchen area.

We also opened the gate and body blocked him (without words) from coming in until he got confused enough to sit and look at us like, "huh??" several times. Rewarding with praise and calm pets when he would sit or back away from the gate.

WE DONT JUST LEAVE THE GATE OPEN when we're not in the kitchen! But when we are in the kitchen it's a great time to practice boundaries and stay!

REMEMBER!! A tired dog is a good dog. This is Buddy after a long morning walk, afternoon puppy date, and short trip to the dog park! We've also trained a bit throughout the day because mental exercise is just as important as physical ❤️

Jumping is natural for dogs, especially when you're holding one of their toys!

If it happens, ask them for a known behavior (an easy one like sit, shown here).

I waited for his eye contact as well (we're working on Focus).

In this video I didn't have to ask for his sit, he offered it, because in just the one day we've been together I've had him sit before almost any activity. Leash on, leash off, before getting on the couch, or walking through doors. He's a quick study!

The keys with puppies are:

Constant observation, kennel for when this isn't possible.

Variety of toys, definitely including puzzles

PATIENCE

50% mental exercise 50% physical exercise

Positive reinforcement training using rewards they want (and not just what you think they want)

Schedules, consistency, and most of all have FUN!

Got barking?!

Dogs have several different types of barking, and once you figure out why your dog is barking- you can then help reduce or stop the behavior completely.

Did you know that yelling your dog's name or shouting something like, "stop barking! quiet!!" doesn't actually help? You're just barking along with your dog and encouraging the behavior!!

You should never use your dog's name in a negative way, either!
