Red Shovelers, like these males, are in the genus Spatula which is fitting for their spoon-shaped beaks! The second part of their scientific name, the species, is platalea which means spoonbill. While not everyone in the Spatula genus is a shoveler, all of the shovelers are in the Spatula genus.

Polygynous dynamics are common in bird species, especially those that engage in lekking!

A lek is a gathering of male birds to engage in competitive displays and courtship rituals. In Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, males will display on display perches, and will pair with multiple females. You can see these vibrant birds and hear their distinct calls in Treasures of the Rainforest!

Our flamingo flock is quite the queer-friendly space! A variety of bird species display polygyny, and our Chilean Flamingo flock is one of many. 🦩

The dynamics in our flock change every year, and pairs and trios of this species will mate for a season and remain committed to each other during that time. We previously have had a female/female/male trio in our flock! Last year, they shared nesting duties and diligently prepared their nests.

Nesting season has begun here at Tracy Aviary, so keep an eye out for nest building and their relationships this year!

There are many birds that have same-s*x partnerships in the wild. We have a few here at Tracy Aviary that we will be sharing this week!

Not many folks know that our Barn Owl pair is a same-s*x pairing! Barn Owls are s*xually dimorphic, meaning that there are differences in size, shape, color, or even behavior by s*x. Female Barn Owls can be identified by darker plumage and spots on their chest, while males have no spots and are whiter.

These two females can be seen by each other's side, snuggled up in Owl Forest.
