More goose-like than other swan species, Coscoroba Swans are the outlier of all the swan species. The genus Cygnus contains all of the species of swans except the Coscorobas, which are in their own genus.

This distinctive species can be seen on the flamingo pond during your next visit!

Listen to our Field Technician Riley share how she is able to distinguish juvenile and adult birds! Here she is handling a Lesser Goldfinch, a songbird that can be seen at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai. The ways to differentiate age in songbirds can vary widely across species!

During our bird banding projects, our Conservation team collects vital data: the bird’s species, age, s*x, measurements, weight, and overall health condition before attaching a small, numbered aluminum band to the bird’s leg. This allows folks to track and monitor this data in the future!

**This bird was handled for the purpose of scientific research under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey and in accordance with all state permitting requirements.**

On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we take a moment to acknowledge that Tracy Aviary and the Nature Center at Pia Okwai are situated on the lands of the Newe (Sosogoi/Shoshone; Kusiutta/Goshute) and Núuchi-u (Yuuta’/Ute) territories. The state of Utah, is named after the Yuta-Shoshone peoples and also includes the territories of the Nuwuvi (Paiute) and Diné (Navajo) peoples.

According to the United Nations, there are an estimated 476 million Indigenous peoples in our global community. For years, Indigenous communities have sought acknowledgment of their identities, lifestyles, and their rights to traditional lands and natural resources. Unfortunately, their rights have often been overlooked throughout history. As an organization, we express our solidarity with Indigenous communities worldwide, statewide, and right here in Salt Lake City.

Some things never change. How time flies with our flock! 🥹 Here is a then and now photo of our Aviculture Manager Allie with Epic, one of our Southern Ground Hornbills.

In these photos Epic is participating in training. Our bird care staff empower the birds to participate in check-ups voluntarily, which reduces stress while also being a form of enrichment. This builds trust between our staff and the birds! We hope Allie and Epic's bond continues to flourish. ✨
