When this feeder station debuted in 2015, mixed flocks of Rosy-Finches began to visit during the winter. ❄️These birds arrive as the snow begins to fall in November, and stay until late May or early June. Some years we have flocks of hundreds on the feeders, other years just a few dozen!

All 3️⃣ species of Rosy-Finches can be seen at Alta during the wintertime: Gray-crowned, Black and Brown-capped!

🏔️Gray-crowned
This is the most abundant species, which makes up over 90% of the winter flocks! When viewing the livestream, be sure to keep an eye out for the "Coastal" subspecies, also known as the "Hepburn" subspecies. They have an all gray head and are a bit larger and pinker, making up about 30% of the flock. The "Interior" subspecies has gray limited to above the eye. Both subspecies have a deep chestnut brown on the body.

🏔️Black
Less common in winter and make up less than 10% of the flocks. Typically, these birds are a dark sooty brown to black overall, contrasting with deep pink flecks and a gray cap. This species becomes more common in March and by May most of the flock will be Black Rosy-Finches. They are the only Rosy-Finch that nest at Alta on north-facing alpine cliffs, but they stop visiting our feeders when the snow melts.

🏔️Brown-capped
These are rare and only 1 or 2 are reported per year at Alta, but a few have been captured and banded by Utah State DWR Biologists here. They are a frosty brown overall, lacking the gray crown of other Rosy-Finch species.

This feeder is operated in collaboration with Friends of Alta , The Finchmasters - Finch Research Network, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources . To witness the Rosy-Finch action in real time, head over to Friends of Alta's Youtube channel for the livestream! 📺
