Up next is my first Western Diamondback (Crotalus Atrox) that I received back in 2017. I named him Ares because he is the baddest dude around. He commands respect. I haven’t used him in one of my classes in a few years because I really just don’t want to deal with him. He’s very strong and after all of these years he still doesn’t like me. Ares, like the warrior he is, is just waiting for the right time to show me who’s boss. I’m hoping to keep him in retirement, but will use him in a class if my other rattley snakes are all shedding and digesting their meal. My next snake that I’ll be profiling is Donovan.

I’ve decided that it is time to spotlight the snakes that I use in my classes. I figured the best snake to start with was the first rattlesnake I acquired back in 2017, after I received my COR from the state of Utah. The most common question I’m asked about my snakes is what their names are. Up to this point I haven’t named my snakes, but I figured now would be a good time to come up with some. So, here is Cleo.
I named her that because she possesses many of the same characteristics as Cleopatra: strong, intelligent, and unpredictable. While I have a good idea of how my other snakes are going to act in most situations, Cleo has surprised me time and time again. She can be acting very sweet and mellow one moment and then turn on a dime into a very defensive gal. She is a Great Basin rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus lutosus) — our local species in the Salt Lake Valley. She was almost full grown when she was collected from in front of a building at the university of Utah. If I had to guess, she is probably about 12 years old. I use her in classes when I need a snake that is quiet at times, but will rattle when I need her to. Stay tuned. Next up will be my Western Diamondback that I obtained not long after Cleo.

My training season here in Salt Lake is winding down. I may only offer a handful of classes before I wrap things up. If you or someone you know is interested in having your dog taken care of this year, now’s the time. This is a one time training that your dog will remember for the rest of its life, so there isn’t a need to have the training fresh in your dog’s mind in the spring.
