My first trap aversion class was a success. I was approached years ago to perform a trap aversion class. I had no idea how I would do such a thing. After a friend of a friend’s dog died in a conibear trap last year, I decided to take on the task. After talking with a number of trappers, scent dog trainers and other dog trainers, I came up with a method that mirrored my rattlesnake training method. Everything worked out the way that I had hoped. It looks like I will be adding this to my repertoire.

I was able to hang out with this handsome fellow for a few days. A few trainers and I were able to run some dogs through a porcupine aversion training in Oregon with great results. Now all I need is a porcupine…….

Here is a picture of my mentor, Web Parton, training my dog, Brandy, back in 2014. He was supposed to retire years ago, but his passion for working with dogs has kept him from doing so. Please do your research when picking out a rattlesnake aversion training for your dog. A dog cannot learn to avoid rattlesnakes in 15 minutes. I have had dogs who have taken classes like this walk right up to my rattlesnake and put their nose on it like they had never seen one before. There is a reason why my classes are 3-4 hours. I work the training in layers and make sure that the dogs will remember the training for the rest of their lives. Feel free to reach out to me for more information.

I am asked all of the time when we will start seeing rattlesnakes on the trails here in the Salt Lake valley. There are always exceptions to the rule, but rattlesnakes typically start becoming most active when the temps are consistently in the 70’s. They are unable to digest food efficiently if it is too cold outside. It looks like we may be hitting 70 in the valley this week, so we might see rattlesnakes start poking their heads out in the middle of the day. Most likely we won’t see them very active for about a month or so.
