When I attended a seminar called Positive Solutions to Aggression, we discussed a lot about how cortisol builds up in the dogโ€™s body when the dog is stressed.

Do you know that the cortisol can stay in the body for 3-7 days?!

During that time, learning becomes more difficult and reactions can happen more quickly.

The same thing happens to us.

When stress levels are high, the thinking part of the brain becomes less effective, while the reactive part takes over.

That means that remembering training techniques, staying consistent, and applying new skills can feel much harder than expected.

Many dog owners are juggling work, family responsibilities, relationship challenges, finances, time constraints, and concerns about their dogโ€™s behavior โ€” all at the same time.

How is your dog doing with that?

Many of us expect our dogs to just walk nicely on the leash in all environments, but it doesn't always work out that way.

If your goal is to have your dog to walk nicely on the leash around other people and dogs, you need to start simple first with obedience.

Start in your house. Then progress to your yard or driveway.

Next to parking lots. Parking lots are great because smells are low and distractions can be low. Make sure it is parking lot that isn't extremely busy.

From there you can progress to more distractions by walking your dog down less busy streets, to moderately busy streets, to super busy streets and large public areas.

Michelle and her lovely dog, Linda, recently worked with me for Linda to build confidence around kids.

My daughter, Iris, was a great help!

Linda felt uneasy around children, which can happen for a variety of reasons, including limited socialization as a puppy or negative past experiences.

To help her succeed, we created a calm, controlled training setup where Iris played an important role.

At first, both Linda and Iris were a little unsure.

Iris stayed calm, remained relatively quiet, kept her body turned slightly to the side, and gently tossed treats toward Linda from a comfortable distance.

Rather than asking Linda to come closer, we allowed her to make her own choices and approach when she felt ready.

As Linda relaxed, she began moving closer to Iris and then away again, all while continuing to receive treats and positive reinforcement.

With patience and consistency, her confidence grew. โœจ

After about an hour of counter-conditioning, Linda was comfortable enough to touch Iris's hand on cue using the "touch" command.

Watching Linda gain confidence and seeing Iris become more comfortable throughout the process was incredible.

Moments like these show that fearful dogs can learn to feel safer around children when training is done thoughtfully and at the dog's pace.

Every dog is different, and progress takes time, but positive change is possible with the right plan and a safe training environment.

We offer private, personalized training ONLINE that really make a difference! ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

Here are essentials every dog parent should know:

๐Ÿพ Secure your dog properly
Never allow your dog to ride loose in the vehicle. Use a crash-tested harness attached to a seat belt, a secured travel crate, or pet carrier.

๐Ÿ’ง Pack a travel kit
Include:
โ€ข Leash, collar with updated ID tags
โ€ข Waste bags
โ€ข Medications, supplements
โ€ข Vaccination, medical records
โ€ข Food, treats
โ€ข Portable water bowl
โ€ข Favorite toys, blanket
โ€ข Pet first-aid supplies

โฐ Schedule regular breaks
Plan stops every 2โ€“3 hours so your dog can stretch, relieve themselves, hydrate, and burn off some energy.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Watch the temperature
Cars can heat up dangerously fast. NEVER leave your dog unattended in a parked vehicle.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Manage meals carefully
Feed smaller meals, esp if your dog is prone to motion sickness. Offer water regularly!

๐Ÿ˜Œ Reduce travel anxiety
Bring familiar items from home and maintain a calm travel environment.

๐Ÿ“ Plan ahead
Research pet-friendly hotels, parks, and rest areas along your route.

The best road trips are the ones where every passenger โ€” especially the furry ones โ€” arrives safely, comfortably, and ready for the adventure ahead.

To train settle at the door, we trained Millie to sit away from the door and to hold the sit as her human opens the door.

Do this by asking your dog to sit. Then take a step away from your dog.

If your dog holds the sit, c/t (click and treat). If your dog breaks the sit, return to your dog and remind her to sit. Then take a smaller step back.

Repeat this same process as you gradually move farther and farther away from your dog, and closer and closer to the door.

If this is the first time training this behavior, donโ€™t expect to do this entire training process in one session.

You will have more success if you break things down and progress forward each day.

Once you reach the door, rather than opening the door right away, touch the door k**b and, if your dog holds the sit, c/t.

Then, move to opening the door a tiny crack and c/t. Progress to opening the door farther and farther with c/t.

Repeat this process until your dog can hold the sit as you open the door. I would also recommend training with no one standing outside the door!

That was Amran.

She loved to let everyone know when someone was approaching the yard โ€” including me when I arrived for training sessions!

While alert barking is natural, it can quickly become frustrating while dogs struggle to stay calm. ๐Ÿคฃ

Through training, Amran and Doug, her dog parent, learned several powerful techniques that helped transform her behavior.

One of the most useful was teaching a "mark" (target) behavior.

Instead of fixating on a person or dog, Amran learned to come touch her owner's hand on cue, giving her a positive way to disengage from the trigger and refocus.

They also practiced LAT (Look At That), a game that rewards dogs for calmly noticing a trigger without reacting.

Over time, Amran discovered she didn't need to bark every time she saw something exciting.

Another key lesson? Being quiet pays! โœจ

Whether she was watching from the window or spending time in the yard, Amran was rewarded for calm choices BEFORE barking started.

Little by little, those calm moments became longer and more frequent.

Because Amran is a high-energy herding breed, we also needed an outlet for her excitement. Food rewards alone weren't enough. ๐Ÿพ

By redirecting her energy into play, such as a flirt pole session, she could channel her enthusiasm in a productive way.

Attendees learned about reading dog behavior and how it helped with dog training.

Dogs may not speak our language, but they are

Learning to read a dogโ€™s body language can help prevent misunderstandings, deepen the human-canine bond, and ensure safety for everyone involved.

It's important to have a good understanding of why your dog is behaving in a certain way.

One of the biggest puppy training secrets is this: training tools are only a small part of the process. Your mindset plays an even bigger role.

Here are 5 ways to stay calm and make progress:

โœ”๏ธ Stay present. Don't dwell on yesterday's challenges or worry about tomorrow's. Focus on the positive moments you're sharing with your puppy today.

โœ”๏ธ Take breaks when needed. If frustration is building, it's okay to safely crate your puppy and give yourself time to reset.

โœ”๏ธ Shift your thinking. Instead of "My puppy won't listen," try asking, "How can I help my puppy succeed?" Curiosity creates solutions.

โœ”๏ธ Celebrate small wins. Lasting behavior change happens one step at a time. Even a minute of improvement is worth recognizing.

โœ”๏ธ Ask for support. Training is easier when you have positive people and professional guidance in your corner.

Remember: progress isn't perfection. The most successful puppy owners focus on small victories, stay flexible, and keep moving forward.

When I was about 8 years old, my dad brought home my first puppy after my neighbor had a โ€œfree pupsโ€ sign.

I was very excited to have a puppy, and my dad was unsure if I was ready to take care of an animal.

I begged him and told him that I would do the work. Surprisingly, at age 8, I raised my dog myself.

I began training my pup right away. She was a cute Shetland Sheepdog and I fell in love with her immediately. I named her Heather. ๐Ÿ•

I absolutely loved playing with Heather, taking her for leash walks, hiking with her off leash and training her.

Over the years, I worked with many animals, even at the Columbus Zoo in the reptile department, but dogs have always been my passion. โค๏ธ

I offer group classes and private pet dog training to adults and their canine companions.

Children are welcome to attend classes with supervision, as long as they follow safety guidelines. Itโ€™s always great to have the whole family involved!

โžก๏ธ Start with something your dog loves. For some dogs, that's chicken, cheese, or hot dogs. For others, it's a tennis ball, tug toy, or squeaky toy. ๐ŸฅŽ

The better the reward, the more excited your dog will be to learn....

โžก๏ธ Then check in with yourself.

If you've had a stressful day, take a few minutes to reset before training. Dogs are incredibly tuned in to our energy, so you want to start from a good place!

โžก๏ธ Next, make training easier than you think it needs to be.

* Want a better recall? Practice "come" in your living room before trying it at a busy park.
* Working on loose leash walking? Start in your backyard before heading into a distracting neighborhood.
* Struggling with jumping? Practice greetings with family members before guests arrive.

And here's the game-changer: focus on what your dog is doing RIGHT.

โœจ Instead of correcting jumping, reward four paws on the floor.
โœจ Instead of focusing on pulling, reward moments when the leash is loose.
โœจ Instead of getting frustrated when your dog is slow to come, celebrate and reward every successful recall.

And keep sessions short, just 2โ€“5 minutes at a time. You'll often get better results than with one long session.

Dog training doesn't have to be perfect. It should be fun, rewarding, and a chance to build a stronger connection with your dog. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ
