Fitness and Senior Dogs!
As dogs age, their bodies change—muscle loss, joint stiffness, and reduced endurance can impact their quality of life. We worry we shouldn’t be exercising them. But with the right fitness routine, senior dogs can stay active, comfortable, and happy!
Here’s why fitness is essential for senior dogs:
✅ Maintains Muscle Mass – Prevents weakness and supports joint health.
✅ Improves Mobility – Reduces stiffness and enhances flexibility.
✅ Supports Weight Management – Keeps excess pounds off, reducing strain on aging joints.
✅ Boosts Mental Well-being – Exercise isn’t just for the body; it keeps their minds sharp too!
Four of my favorite low-impact exercises for senior dogs:
🐾 Cavalettis – Help improve coordination, strength, and joint flexibility by encouraging controlled, purposeful movement.
🌊 Swimming – Builds muscle and improves cardiovascular health without stressing the joints.
⚖️ Balance Exercises – Strengthen core muscles, enhance stability, and prevent falls. Simple exercises on balance pads or wobble boards can make a big difference!
🚶 Low-Impact Walks – Keep joints moving while maintaining endurance and overall mobility. Adjust pace and distance based on your dog’s ability.
By incorporating movement tailored to your senior dog’s needs, you can help them stay strong, mobile, and happy for years to come!
