🦷🐴 Today was dentist day for all the horses! 🐴🦷
Routine dental care is one of the most important parts of keeping your horses healthy, comfortable, and performing their best. Floating helps remove sharp enamel points that can cause mouth pain, ulcers, difficulty chewing, poor digestion, weight loss, and even issues with the bit while riding.
And remember—the dentist isn’t just for your senior horses!
Your young horses need dental care too, especially those between 2 and 5 years old. At this age, their mouths are changing quickly as they lose baby teeth and permanent teeth come in. These rapid changes can create problems that need to be addressed early, which is why young horses often benefit from exams every 6 months.
Another big thing to watch for in your young geldings and studs is wolf teeth—and yes, mares can get them too, though it’s less common. These small teeth sit right in front of the premolars and serve no real purpose, but they can create major bit interference and pain-related behavior issues, especially before a horse starts training under saddle.
So here’s your reminder: get your horse’s teeth checked by your equine dentist or veterinarian, no matter their age.
Don’t wait until your horse starts losing weight or dropping condition. By that point, the issue can be much harder to correct. Sometimes those “easy keepers” aren’t just naturally made—they’re created by owners staying on top of the essentials.
✨ Do what’s right for your horse. Preventive care always pays off.
