Rowan County Animal Shelter We believe a safer world starts with kindness. Our mission is to protect the vulnerable—both animals and people—with compassion as our compass.

The Rowan County Animal Shelter is an open admission, municipal shelter committed to protecting animals while working to promote a harmonious atmosphere between the animals and residents of our county. Over the years our Shelter has strived to become more adoption friendly and inclusive of the community who supports us. We have gone from averaging 35 adoptions a month in 2010, to saving the lives of more than 3,000 animals in 2020. The Animal Shelter and all of its staff are very proud of the progress that has been made and know that none of it would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our caring citizens.

A152229 Paw Paw
MEDICAL ADOPTION

EVERYBODY ACT SCARED!

Our old man Paw Paw has decided he wants to be REALLY SCARY for Halloween. We’re just going to let him live his spooky little dream because, bless his heart, he can’t see well enough to know what he's wearing.

Paw Paw is a medical adoption because this fella is approximately 110 years old...okay, he’s really only 10, but his body apparently thinks he fought in the Civil War.

He’s blind, mostly deaf, has arthritis, and has some seriously questionable dental work going on. Basically, he’s a walking collection of old man problems wrapped up in the sweetest little package.

But he's SMART, GOOFY, GENTLE, LOVING, AND ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS. He has so much love left to give, and all he needs is someone who can look past the gray muzzle, the medical quirks, and his questionable Halloween fashion choices and see the amazing soul underneath.

SURELY THERE IS A SENIOR-DOG-LOVING HUMAN OUT THERE WHO NEEDS THIS OLD MAN IN THEIR LIFE!

(And seriously… don't tell him about the costume. His confidence is the only thing around here that isn't arthritic)

Medical Adoption

Meet our resilient boy, Peterete AKA Pete

Pete’s story began in heartbreaking circumstances. When he came to us, he was in an awful state with a very serious gash on his neck. But thanks to weeks of dedicated care, treatment, and love from our amazing veterinary staff, this brave boy has made wonderful progress and is finally ready to find a family of his very own!

His neck is mostly healed, but Pete will need a follow-up veterinary visit after adoption to ensure everything continues to heal properly.

A few things to know about Pete:
Weighs approximately 40 lbs
Up to date on vaccines
Microchipped
Heartworm Negative

Pete has been through more than any dog should have to endure, and now it’s his turn for a happy ending. He deserves a loving home where he can feel safe, be spoiled, and never have to wonder when his next kindness will come.
