Salem Saves Animals

Salem Saves Animals Salem Saves Animals is dedicated to the change in animal abuse laws and to promoting education and awareness in our community through positive example.

After the horrific tragedy of the "Puppy Doe" animal abuse case rocked media across America, our group of dedicated animal lovers were moved to spark change in our local community to protect innocent animals from those who would do them harm. Our founder, Lorelei Stathopoulos, was so upset by the savagery committed that she and founding member Leanne Marrama attended the Puppy Doe hearings to hono

r the poor creature who had suffered. After being unwelcome by other protesters, Lorelei used her feelings of deep anger and sadness to promote change. Now Salem Saves Animals is working hard to promote tougher penalties and longer jail sentences for individuals who commit vicious crimes against our four legged friends. With the aid of Senator Joan Lovely, we are working to implement an Animal Abusers Registry in the city of Salem; we are also working to assist local shelters to find good homes for abandoned animals.

Scientists have watched female octopuses pick up rocks and throw them at males that keep bothering them while the males try to mate. These scenes happen under the sea, near reefs and sandy bottoms, where octopuses move and hide. The females aim the stones and push them away with their arms, making it clear they do not want the male’s attention.

This behavior looks like a way for females to defend themselves and say “no.” Octopuses are smart animals and can use objects in their world, so throwing rocks may be a practical tool to stop unwanted advances. By pushing a male away, a female can protect her space, reduce stress, and keep control of her own body and choices.

Watching octopuses do this changes how people think about them. It shows they can act with purpose and set boundaries. Scientists studying these actions learn more about animal behavior, communication, and social life under the sea. These findings remind us that animals can have surprising ways to look out for themselves.
