I received a call today from the Salem Police Department on June 1, 2026, regarding a cat that had been shot with a bow and arrow. The officer informed me that they had received a call from the 200 block of West 8th Street In salem ohio , and the caller reported that the cat appeared to be in bad shape.
The officer responded to the call, and I let him know that I was en route. The officers later called back to say they had found the cat and taken it to Adamson Veterinary Services for treatment.
When I arrived at the clinic, I was taken to the area where the cat was being held. Upon examination, I realized that this poor cat had been shot with a small crossbow, and the bolt had penetrated one side of its body and was working its way out the other side with every exhale. The cat had lost mobility in its rear legs and was actively suffering.
Upon further investigation, I discovered that not only was the cat suffering, but it had likely been in this condition for at least a week. I could see that its rear paws had been dragging on the ground for some time, as they were completely raw and had formed a light callus over the wounds.
After witnessing how difficult every movement was for this poor creature, I made the decision to humanely euthanize the cat.
To the individual responsible for this: I have secured the bolt, and it will be sent to the forensics division in Richfield, Ohio, for testing and fingerprint analysis. If I discover your identity, I will do everything in my power to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. This was not an accident; it was a heinous act of cruelty. I will pursue felony charges against you, and, if necessary, I will request a trial by jury so that everyone can see and understand what you have done. I will show you the same compassion that you showed to this poor animal None!
I am reaching out to all of you who live in the area to see if anyone has ring cameras or security cameras in the area that may have captured something relevant. If you have any footage that could help, please contact me at the Columbiana County Humane Society. Thank you!
I would like to extend a very special thank you to the quick actions of the Salem Police Department and Adamson Veterinary Services. Officer Edgerton, if it weren't for your swift response, this poor cat would have continued to suffer for an unknown period before ultimately giving up. Ademson's Vet Clinic, thank you for seeing this poor animal on such short notice. Sometimes we forget that it takes everyone—from the clinics to the community—to make a real difference. This was all made possible because someone made a simple phone call. Together, we will put these violators behind bars where they belong.
