🦷 Let's talk teeth! 🦷

As pet owners, we do everything we can to keep our furry friends both happy, and healthy.

But did you know that dental health plays a huge role in their overall well-being? Periodontal disease is one of the most common, yet overlooked, conditions in pets, and it can cause pain, infection, and serious health complications if left untreated.

Keeping up with your pet’s oral hygiene isn’t just about their comfort—it saves you from stress, costly treatments, and preventable health problems down the road. Here’s how:

💸Saves you money: Regular brushing and checkups help avoid expensive tooth extractions and medical treatments.

🚑Prevents emergency vet visits: Advanced gum disease can cause abscesses and infections, leading to urgent (costly) care.

😻Strengthens your bond: Pets in pain may become irritable or withdrawn. Keeping their mouth healthy helps maintain their playful, affectionate personality.

👃A fresher-smelling home: Let’s be honest—bad breath isn’t fun for anyone! A healthy mouth means fresher kisses and cuddles.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Pet’s Teeth (and Health) in Top Shape:

🪥Daily brushing: A few minutes a day can reduce periodontal disease. Use pet-safe toothpaste and a soft brush.

👩‍⚕️Annual professional cleanings: Your vet can clean plaque and tartar from UNDER the gumline and assess overall periodontal health with an anesthetized exam and dental X-rays.

🦴Dental treats and chews approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC): Can help reduce plaque buildup.
VOHC-approved water additives and sprays: Can reduce bacteria in the mouth, slowing plaque buildup.

✔Regular vet checkups: Early detection means easier, less expensive treatment.

💕Valentine's Day is a day for sharing our love for one another. Whether it may be through flowers , candy, or chocolate- it is important to remember our pets! 💕

🍫 Chocolate:
-Being surprised with that heart-shaped box that is wrapped in that beautiful ribbon could figuratively make your heart skip a beat, however, this could become a dangerous reality if your pet ingests them!
-Chocolate contains Theobromine, which is a strong stimulant to both cats and dogs. Causing a dangerously high heart rate and can cause seizures or fatality.
-Though pets should never consume chocolate, dark chocolate contains a significantly higher amount of Theobromine, and could lead to all these signs with a much smaller amount being ingested.

💐 Lilies:
-Although gifting flowers is a romantic gesture, it can put a stop to the romance real quick.
-Avoid bouquets with lilies, as they are extremely toxic to cats.
-The smallest amount of pollen, foliage, or even vase water has the potential to cause Kidney failure.

🍬 Xylitol:
-If a package states "Sugar Free", or "Low Calorie", there is a good chance that this product contains artificial sweeteners.
-The most common artificial sweetener being Xylitol, causes a rapid Insulin release in dogs, which could lead to a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and Liver failure.
-Always aide to the side of caution and check those packages!

🍷 Alcohol:
-Champagne, wine, and other alcoholic drinks can be a fun part of Valentine's Day celebration, but glasses should be left unattended!
-Alcohol can cause symptoms ranging from GI distress to more sever symptoms like loss of consciousness.

The Westosha Vet Staff would like to wish our clients and their pets a safe Valentine's Day.

If your pet has come in to contact with any of the above, please call Pet Poison Helpline.

Whether you're rooting for The Seahawks or The Patriots, we're rooting for a day with no pass interferences! 🐶🏈

🍗 Chicken Wings & Bones:
-Though they may be staple to your game day line up, be sure to properly dispose of all bones and meat.
-Cooked chicken bones have the potential to splinter easily and cause a great deal of discomfort to your pet's mouth, throat, and/or stomach - and can even cause blockages.
-Boneless wings may easy to pop in your mouth, even then, they to are risky! The fatty, seasoned meat can trigger pancreatitis in both dogs and cats.

🥑🧅 Onion Dip & Guacamole:
-Pairs perfectly with those Wavy Lays Potato Chips, or even our favorite Tortilla Chip. Red blood cells? Not so much.
-Both dips contain alliums which damage those Red blood cells in cats and dogs. While toxicity is dependent on the amount consumed, it's best to keep these dips out of your pet's line of view.
-The Avocado isn't the main concern when it comes to Guacamole, but the large seed can cause major interruptions to your play book and become an obstruction if swallowed.

🍺🍷 Beer & Alcohol:
-Alcohol is quickly absorbed and is high toxic to pets. Even the smallest amount from a spilled drink or unattended cup can cause for a not so fun day.
-Alcohol can cause vomiting, disorientation, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases; coma or sudden death.
-Because dogs and cats cannot metabolize alcohol like humans, it is recommended to keep your drinks held high.

Don't let your game day get interrupted, have a plan to ensure your day is nothing but spectacular.
