💕Valentine's Day is a day for sharing our love for one another. Whether it may be through flowers , candy, or chocolate- it is important to remember our pets! 💕
🍫 Chocolate:
-Being surprised with that heart-shaped box that is wrapped in that beautiful ribbon could figuratively make your heart skip a beat, however, this could become a dangerous reality if your pet ingests them!
-Chocolate contains Theobromine, which is a strong stimulant to both cats and dogs. Causing a dangerously high heart rate and can cause seizures or fatality.
-Though pets should never consume chocolate, dark chocolate contains a significantly higher amount of Theobromine, and could lead to all these signs with a much smaller amount being ingested.
💐 Lilies:
-Although gifting flowers is a romantic gesture, it can put a stop to the romance real quick.
-Avoid bouquets with lilies, as they are extremely toxic to cats.
-The smallest amount of pollen, foliage, or even vase water has the potential to cause Kidney failure.
🍬 Xylitol:
-If a package states "Sugar Free", or "Low Calorie", there is a good chance that this product contains artificial sweeteners.
-The most common artificial sweetener being Xylitol, causes a rapid Insulin release in dogs, which could lead to a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and Liver failure.
-Always aide to the side of caution and check those packages!
🍷 Alcohol:
-Champagne, wine, and other alcoholic drinks can be a fun part of Valentine's Day celebration, but glasses should be left unattended!
-Alcohol can cause symptoms ranging from GI distress to more sever symptoms like loss of consciousness.
The Westosha Vet Staff would like to wish our clients and their pets a safe Valentine's Day.
