CWD management is not conservation. The plans and strategies implemented by state agencies has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. It’s laughable and everyone sees it, yet these people keep going as if they don’t really care what the hunters and landowners have discovered and questioned. These fake strategies and studies compromises hunters, land owners, tax payers, business owners, and has done more financial damage to the hunter funded Pittman-Robertson Act than any other project since its inception in 1937. What we are about to look at is gonna show the hypocrisy of how those that push this agenda for research and agency funding is damaging the greatest legacy in the history of the outdoors. If data tells us how something spreads shouldn’t we take all variables. The following was basic algebra that we took in the 8th grade. If a variable gives the same result as another variable, then it’s easy to solve an equation. Here is the big question. Why is only one variable discussed, and it’s the one that compromises hunters.
Trust me, keep reading.
We are told that prions (misfolded proteins) spreads CWD. There is a lot of division in the scientific community about a prion, and we are not gonna try to solve that debate. What we are gonna look at is what those that push the CWD narrative tell us about CWD prions labeled PrPCWD or PrPSC. Prions do not have genetic material, there is no DNA, you can’t tell what animal or where it came from. CWD is not viral or bacterial. It simply spreads through what they tell us are these prions. They also tell us they stay in the soil for decades and even fire does not get rid of them. Everything we are gonna talk about in the rest of this article is as the agencies tell us. Remember this is their words, so let’s see if 2+2=4 on how CWD is spread.
A deer becomes infected from contact with another deer or from the environment where prions have been shed by infected deer. So we are told to not move deer either live animals from deer farmers, or from a harvested deer, as it spreads CWD. Those that hunt know the challenges of traveling to another state or hunting in a CWD zone and getting a deer to your taxidermist, processor, or even to your house, simply based on how these regulations tell us moving deer is what spreads the disease. Remember, exposure to the Prion is how a deer catches CWD, no other way. Let’s look at a few studies.
One study shows that alfalfa and barley among other plants will uptake prions from CWD animals, eating, or urinating and defecating on soil where it is grown. Carlson, et al. (2023) Another study used wheat to show that contamination was present. Rasmussen, et al. (2014). Another study titled “Grass plants (corn is a grass) bind, retain, uptake, and transport infectious prions” Pritzkow, et al. (2015) states that “Both roots and leaves capture PrPSC efficiently, even at very small concentrations, equivalent to those PRESENT IN BIOLOGICAL FLUIDS, such as blood and urine.
There are also just as many studies that show that predators move prions across the landscape, turkey vultures (buzzards) are all over the country and are migratory birds, sometimes traveling 200 miles in a day, coyotes can travel 20 miles in a day. Also, deer herds are like a chain. When herds make their daily circles they over lap other herds, eating, grooming, and passing on fluids to other herds. There would not be a deer herd in a region who hasn’t by way of contact of others, touched all the other herds in a region within a few months this would create chains of spider webs hundreds of miles long.
There are many more studies about how predators and the environment spreads CWD that have proven this, and we could go on and on, but here is the bigger picture.
I’m going to relate to Alabama and our SE states. Alabama imports roughly 90 percent of its usable corn each year. This is used in feed mills, corn meal, food for humans etc. and also the state sells permits to bait and hunt deer with it, among other things. Almost all of the imported corn comes from either nearby states such as row crop farms in Benton County MS, (one of the the most infected CWD counties in the south) or primarily from the Midwest where CWD is most prevalent. Now let’s look at Alfalfa. Most cattle and horse farmers, and deer outfitters, are gonna tell you that Wyoming and Montana alfalfa is superior and safer from mold risk and is highly sought after throughout the country. Guess where the primary area is..SE Wyoming, a landscape where CWD cervids has shed on since 1985, with some of the highest prevalence rates in the country. I wonder how much has been shipped to Cattle and dairy farmers in Southern Wisconsin, how about Alberta and Saskatchewan deer outfitters?
How much sod (the grass and topsoil) has turf farms shipped to neighboring counties in this infected part of Southern TN and Northern MS, to previously uninfected counties in this region. As we know deer will find some irrigated Bermuda in the late summer. What about the green fields of wheat we all plant? Yep. It mostly comes from the Midwest…where CWD is everywhere.
You see folks, these industries are too big to test. Heck CWD is in corn and corn syrup, even soybeans which means cereals, candy, breads, and pretty much all processed foods we eat. I’m curious, has any agency ever told us to have all foods with corn, corn starch, or corn syrup tested before we eat them? Has the CDC ever discussed this? So next time a vegan tells you deer are unsafe to eat, tell them it is more likely to be in their tofu than your venison.
The reason agencies don’t discuss these CWD agents being moved as it is impossible to test by volume, and is a million times more likely to move prions than a deer in a truck. It also makes their analgoy similar to taking a bottle of water and pouring it in the ocean and thinking you can scoop it back up and drink it. Do we really think a deer in the back of a trailer alive or dead compares in any way to the millions of tons of grass, grain, hay, topsoil, sand, gravel, or any other product or material shipped in from other states where infection is high. If an email or phone call suggested any entity of testing for prions in these multi billion dollar industries, they would get laughed at and reported as spam. Yet here we are hunters. The CWD narrative is paying salaries and giving raises across the country while compromising others. Hunters must do as they are doing in MO and demand this madness to stop. Accountability is coming.
You see when “they” read this they are gonna say “then CWD would be everywhere”
Please remind them that is what we say about their logic.
CWD is a genetic problem and will work itself out.
Lots more to come this week!
