Friends of Strays is St. Pete's oldest no-kill shelter. We believe love saves lives, and everyone can be part of that work.
(458)

From adoptions and community cat programs, we saved over 4,200 lives in 2025! Petersburg’s oldest no kill animal shelter. Founded in 1978, our top priority is to connect animals in need of rescue with people who will love them. With thousands of cats and dogs entering our shelter every year, Friends of Strays’ staff and volunteers provide the utmost love and care for every animal that comes through our doors. Through our outreach, advocacy, and social service we strive to ensure that animal companionship is accessible to all. In addition to pet adoption, we seek to create a better world for pets and people by focusing on life saving programs promoting pet retention, community empowerment, and humane pet ownership education. We are heavily dependent on the altruism of the public for our sustained success on behalf of these animals. For more, please visit our website: friendsofstrays.org. Donate
Donations directly support the care of the animals in our shelter as well as our many lifesaving programs throughout the community. Thoughtful and generous bequests from estates allow us to finance the essential lifesaving services we provide for the companion animals in our care. Please consider leaving a legacy, honoring a loved one through a Tribute, making a one time or reoccurring donation or sponsoring one of our events. Friends of Strays is a 501(c) charitable non-profit organization. Please support us by donating today at friendsofstrays.org/donate

‼️ Important notice: Please read for an update on staying connected with Friends of Strays. ‼️

Meta is testing new limits on how many links some pages can share in their posts and comments each month without a paid subscription. Friends of Strays is not currently being impacted by this limitation, however, we are preparing our community should these restrictions be imposed on our page in the future.

We at Friends of Strays prioritize our funding to life-saving care and daily refuge of our shelter animals. Therefore, a paid Meta subscription is not an option we are pursuing at this time.

If the restriction reaches our page in the future, we may not be able to include clickable links in every post. We want to make sure you can still find the resources, programs, and opportunities to support our work that matter to you as best we can. Here are our most commonly-used links!

Let us introduce you to the bonded sisters Gracie girl 🕊 and Roxy the rockstar 🎸!

8-year-old Gracie is an outgoing, loving girl who wants to become friends with any person she meets.💕She's a curious girl who enjoys endless conversations about any topic. She's a great listener, especially when it comes to hearing her sister Roxy's music. 🎼

Roxy is a 2-year-old girl who likes to march to her drum. She is very passionate about making her own music and often enjoys some peace and quiet so she can focus on her masterpieces. 🎶Roxy always plays her music for her sister Gracie first for feedback so she can perfect her craft before sharing it with human audiences. Roxy is appreciative of her human fans and loves to show her appreciation through cat kisses.😽

These two girls love to cuddle and can't wait to snuggle up on either side of you while you guys hang out on the couch or get ready for bed. 🐈🐈‍⬛

🐾We’re open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday for adoptions.🐾

Earlier this week a good samaritan brought in a litter of kittens, one of which was found stuck to a glue trap. The kitten was able to be safely removed from the trap but was left covered in glue residue.

Our medical team worked quickly and diligently to carefully remove the glue that was stuck all over his body. The kitten is now glue-free and after receiving some drying cuddles from our staff post-Dawn bath, they are now safely recovering in a foster home with its other siblings.

We are so thankful for our medical team, who immediately stepped in to treat this kitten, preventing further injuries from occurring.

This is a friendly reminder that glue traps are an inhumane way to trap unwanted critters. Just like in this kitten's case, glue traps can trap the wrong individual and cause unnecessary harm.

For 🐈, we wanted to bring you along with vet assistant Daniella on a behind-the-scenes look at ringworm treatment in ringworm iso.

Ringworm is a very common condition seen in the shelter setting. We are able to safely isolate and treat ringworm in animals with donor support from the community. The average cost to treat ringworm is $80 per cat.

If you’re able, please consider donating to Friends of Strays, where your financial support goes directly to the everyday care and treatment for animals at our shelter. 💚💙

You can donate using the link in our bio or using this link: www.friendsofstrays.org/donate!
