Friends of Strays Animal Shelter

Friends of Strays Animal Shelter Friends of Strays is St. Pete's oldest no kill shelter. From adoptions and community cat programs, we saved over 4,500 lives in 2023!
(459)

Petersburg’s oldest no kill animal shelter. Founded in 1978, our top priority is to connect animals in need of rescue with people who will love them. With thousands of cats and dogs entering our shelter every year, Friends of Strays’ staff and volunteers provide the utmost love and care for every animal that comes through our doors. Through our outreach, advocacy, and social service we strive to e

nsure that animal companionship is accessible to all. In addition to pet adoption, we seek to create a better world for pets and people by focusing on life saving programs promoting pet retention, community empowerment, and humane pet ownership education. We are heavily dependent on the altruism of the public for our sustained success on behalf of these animals. For more, please visit our website: friendsofstrays.org. Donate
Donations directly support the care of the animals in our shelter as well as our many lifesaving programs throughout the community. Thoughtful and generous bequests from estates allow us to finance the essential lifesaving services we provide for the companion animals in our care. Please consider leaving a legacy, honoring a loved one through a Tribute, making a one time or reoccurring donation or sponsoring one of our events. Friends of Strays is a 501(c) charitable non-profit organization. Please support us by donating today at friendsofstrays.org/donate

What are your favorite veggies? Currently ours are Rutabaga and Radicchio 😁
These 2-month-old boys are just two of many kittens available for adoption! Adopting two kittens together is a win for everyone: they get a buddy for life, and you get the benefit of watching them play, cuddle, and grow up together.
💙💚To see all our available cats and kittens, visit our website friendsofstrays.org, and visit them between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. any day of the week at The Cat Box, 3015 46th Ave N, St Pete!💙💚

“Trixie (Gardenia) is doing great!
I’m sending a photo after her first grooming and she did well. Also, she loves playing fetch! She is getting around fine with 3 legs!” - Candace

We love seeing our alumni happy in their new homes! Send your updates to [email protected] or send us a message on social media. 💙💚

Some pets just can’t catch a break… but Magic’s streak of bad luck might finally be ending!
This sweet soul came to Friends of Strays in rough shape—he had a high fever, a painful wound on his hind paw that required a toe amputation, and had recently recovered from scabies. Magic had also been declawed, a harmful and outdated practice that can cause lasting physical and emotional damage.
Our team jumped into action to help him heal, and after a few weeks of treatment and TLC, Magic is feeling so much better.
He’s a quiet, laid-back cat who’s been through a lot. Now he’s ready for a fresh start in the home he deserves: with someone who will love and protect him for life.
💙💚 To meet Magic, visit him at The Cat Box, 3015 46th Ave. N., St. Pete. We're open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 💚💙

Meet Babe! This 8-year-old girl is large and in charge, and her moods shift like the tones of her tortoiseshell coat. She has that classic "tortitude" where her sweetness comes with a generous dose of spice. Babe is available for adoption and would do best in a quiet adults-only home with no other pets: she prefers to be the queen bee! 💙💚
Babe came to us through our Pet Guardianship Program! Should your pets outlive you, it's an important part of their care that you have a plan for them. Babe's owner ensured that she would have a safe place to go. We were the day after her owner passed to scoop Babe up and bring her to the shelter where our staff and volunteers can comfort her while she waits to be adopted to a new home. We are so grateful to our local Raymond James Wealth Planning team for hosting their "Cupcakes for Critters" bake sale and supporting Friends of Strays for the third year in a row through their sweet sales! Their team made more than 1,200 cupcakes, taking time and care to blend together amazing flavors and on-theme decorative flair, and raised over $5,500 for cats and dogs in need. That's a lot of batter!
Thank you so much to this dedicated group of animal lovers and top-tier bakers.
💙💚
