Our Philosophy

As the role of the dog has evolved from that of a working species, to one of a beloved family member, we must too think about the evolution of dog training. These ideas are outdated and there’s growing scientific data supporting the use of science-based learning principles resulting in much more effective and humane ways to train dogs. Pete Dog Works stands for positive based trai

ning with evidence based outcomes. For dogs who thrive and are happy and healthy. Our core model focuses on:
• positive motivation to encourage behaviors (positive is not permissive)
• training protocols based on science-based learning theory
• replacing undesirable behaviors with more appropriate responses
• management for success; eliminate practice of unwanted behaviors
• a fair leadership strategy
• clear communication system
• a wholistic approach where nutrition, exercise, and enrichment compliment training
• having fun and building a relationship

To train a dog you need motivation, otherwise change in behavior won't happen. Motivation comes in many forms, some trainers use rewards to encourage a dog to continue doing a certain behavior and others use fear, intimidation, and pain - we NEVER use pain, force, or fear to train any dog we work with. We believe in using positive motivation to get desired behaviors, setting the dog up for success, and focus on relationship building. Training Team

Heather Morris comes to St. Petersburg from Washington, DC with 15 years experience working professionally in the pet industry. In 2010, she created Spot On Training, LLC which evolved into one of the most well-respected, successful dog training companies in the Washington, DC metro area. Spot On Training was consistently recognized as the ‘BEST’ in the Washingtonian Magazine and The Washington City Paper by its loyal client base. This one-woman operation quickly grew into a small team of trainers teaching group classes, speciality workshops, and puppy play in its own studio located in one of the fastest growing and most dog-friendly neighborhoods of DC. Additionally, Spot On Training provided private training and behavior consultations in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Spot On Training established many relationships with other pet businesses in the area and was sold in 2016 to one of its competitors who still successfully operates and maintains its positive reputation today. Prior to the creation of Spot On Training, Heather was fortunate enough to combine her passion for food (a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America) as well as her love of dogs to create a unique business selling organic dog treats to local boutiques in the area. It wasn’t long before her love of active, healthy dogs and her devotion to being the “best” in her field opened up a new career pathway. This pathway led to a dog training position, a general manager position, and eventually a training director offer. Heather is a member of:
• Certified Professional Dog Trainer- Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA)
• Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT)
• Dalmatian Club of America
• Dog Training Club of St. Petersburg

The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers is the first national certification for dog trainers. Heather carries a strong sense of pride in this accomplishment and nationally recognized certification and honor. Like all honors, certification in professional dog training carries responsibilities like continuing education, maintaining a code of ethics, and upholding the highest standard of training. Heather lives in Old Southeast with her husband, 2 children, and her dog, Kismet. She currently trains and competes in conformation, rally, and dock diving.

Happy Toes Tuesday! 🐾🐾

Ben is here to show off his handling skills and teach you a simple training routine to incorporate into your week.

Step One: Grab your treat pouch and some high value, small or easy to break up treats! Grab nail clippers if you have them.

Step Two: Grab a blanket, towel, or platform to practice on. Having a consistent object your dog knows = positive handling experiences can help them feel confident about what comes next.

Step Three: Start without clippers in hand, and practice touching your dogs paws gently. If they seem stressed by this- start easier! Work on touching their shoulder for a second or two and work your way down the leg.

Step Four: Mark with a “yes!” (Or other marker word) AS your hand is still on their paw - and reward your pup with a treat!

Step Five: Toss a treat off your handling area to reset your pup and give them a break!

Step Six: See if your dog returns back to your handling station- we call this a “start button” or may say your dog is “opting in” .

If your dog seems hesitant to join you for more training, ask them for an easy cue like sit, and end your session for now. Keep your next handling session even shorter and easier!

Training- especially for cooperative care and handling is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time! Reward your dog often and keep your sessions short and sweet.

Start with getting your dog comfortable having their feet touched , practice touching their nails, then introduce having the clippers in your hand, and work your way up to tiny clips of the nail in time.

Next week we will cover how to introduce actually clipping the nail!

*and remember, if your dog is exhibiting any major signs of stress please contact a professional to help you evaluate their behavior before proceeding. Excessive panting, seeing the whites of their eyes, drooling, yelping, nipping, cowering, etc : are all signs of distress that need attention.

Try to incorporate a short handling session into your routine this week!

🐾 MINI TIP MONDAY 🐾

One of the biggest things we remind clients on walks:

Don’t wait for your dog to “mess up” before engaging with them.

It’s easy to notice pulling, barking, or distractions… but the real magic happens when we notice the good stuff first.

Loose leash?
Checking in with you?
Walking beside you calmly?
Choosing to ignore something exciting?

Reward it!

Behaviors that are reinforced are the ones that get repeated.

This week on your walks, try catching 5 moments your dog is doing something right… before they make a “mistake.”

Tell us in the comments:

What’s something your dog does beautifully on walks that deserves more recognition? 👇

Happy “Toes Tuesday!” 🐾🩵

This week, we’re diving into what you should know before starting your own weekly grooming and handling routine to help your dog feel comfortable, confident, and cared for.

Remember: every dog is an individual. Talking with your Veterinarian and Groomer about your dog’s specific grooming and care needs is an important first step.

Don’t have a Veterinarian or Groomer yet? No worries! We’ll be covering how to find the right fit for you and your dog later in this series.

And even if you’re not ready to start nail trims or ear cleaning yet, there are still plenty of ways to practice grooming and handling skills now so those experiences become far less stressful for both you and your dog later on.

Today we’re talking about:
• How often should I groom my dog?
• How can I fit regular care into my busy schedule?
• When should I seek professional help?

If your dog shows signs of stress or discomfort during grooming or handling, our experienced training team is here to help. We can work with you to better understand your dog’s needs and build positive, low stress grooming skills together. 🐾

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave humans and military working animals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their loyalty, courage, and dedication will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, we are especially grateful for the bond between handlers and their animal partners, from dogs to horses.. serving side by side with trust and unwavering devotion. 🇺🇸🐾

Wishing you a meaningful day spent with loved ones as we reflect, remember, and give thanks.

🌟🩵Practice is key to teaching your puppy valuable skills like place and stay! Especially around distractions like other puppies romping around during play time 😍

At puppy camp your puppy works on more than just socializing and play time (though there’s a lot of that too!). Our skilled trainers also work on manners and real life skill building.
