I wanted to talk about the power of verbal-praise for your dogs. There is SO much power in capturing good choices with a simple "good boy!" You can effectively shape basic behaviors over time with good timing.

I separate my verbal-markers into praise-marker and payment-markers. A praise-marker marks a good choice, but tells the dog no money or treats are following thereafter. It's so normal for us as humans to only correct our dogs instead of praising the good choices.

Praise your damn dog! Celebrate those wins.

Sniffy garden has NOT been going well 😥 The squirrels would dig through my pots every day and unbury most of my seeds. Mochi has twice knocked over the pots (because he has to act scary around the coyotes) and I'm calling it at that lmao.
My garden otherwise is doing well, but my dog garden was a failure 😭

I wanted to talk about the Scan cue as an enrichment cue, or cues that encourage our dogs to BE dogs. Today I'm walking Mochi the Shepsky and Yosha the Shiba on our daily woods walks.

Highly recommend teaching your dogs to "Scan" with just verbal-praise. It's a powerful cue that can reset your dog, be used to reset fixations or feeling overwhelmed, and you can easily build difficulty / complexity on it to "Scan for Squirrels" or whatever critters your dogs love.

This is Yosha, my Shiba Inu we adopted last year. She was extremely undersocialized and basic things like walking down stairs are extremely upsetting for this dog. We've tried many things like pairing high-value treats with the stairs, however she really is not a treat-motivated dog whatsoever :\ So I can only use verbal praise and an extreme amount of patience.

Some days she's happy to run down the stairs for our walks, but many times I have to carry her down. But today was a good day! I'm super proud of my girl!

I've never owned a dog that 'smiles' before Yosha.

Yosha is a Shiba we got last year and she was severely undersocialized. She turns 8 in a few days. Working with this dog has been extremely humbling. I've never had a dog that I felt like verbally praising adds more stress than it helps. Thankfully we're long past that point.

Despite her radical undersocialization, she LOVES attention. She loves being held, talked to, and her ears go full airplane mode while she's cheesin' a shiba smile. She has so much personality 🥺

This is Layla, she's been one of my regulars for a while now and is a special girl.

She's a classic Sheppy. Very intelligent, loves being talked to, and very leery of the world. She's the frisbee dog I never got to have, so I can't complain about her insistence to always play.

She's usually a short-walk kind of gal. Usually we just get a few houses away and she is done. She'll refuse to go further, turns around, and heads straight home.

Today she walked a LOT further than we usually go. I didn't have to bribe her or give her motivational speeches to keep going. It's the small things like this that you appreciate the most in our dogs ❤🐾

I'm launching my Discord and wanted to open it up to the community.

I'm creating a space for dog owners who want to understand their dogs, especially those navigating reactivity, anxiety, or fear. Ask me any dog training questions, share your experiences, and connect with other owners.

It leans nerdy, gamers welcome.

I'm still setting up things, but you're invited to join at https://discord.gg/Qa42Mq6Vt
