A big congratulations to Jonathan, his family and Ash on being the first Ascheland Kennel pup to run in the Utility test. Ash scored a 191 Prize 2 in her test last weekend and just narrowly missed a Prize 1. A very nice accomplishment for both as Ash doesn't even turn 3 until June and this being Jonathans first Utility test as a handler. I'm very proud of you both and I know you guys will get a Prize 1 after another round of training.

Britta, Clare and I will be working the SMCA booth at Pheasant Fest next weekend so if you find yourself at the event stop on by!

The 2026 Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic will be held on February 20, 21 & 22, 2026 at the Minneapolis Convention Center located at 1301 2nd Ave S, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55403. This is Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s signature event, a three-day celebration of upland habitat, hunting and conservation that annually draws more than 20,000 supporters. Coming attractions for 2026 include a Bird Dog Parade, Youth Village, Public Lands Stage, Quail Classic Stage, Path to the Uplands Stage, Habitat Stage, Bird Dog Stage, Women on the Wing Lounge, and more than 400 unique vendors featuring outfitters, gear, dogs, food, and so much more!
The SMCA will have a booth again this year at Pheasant Fest. If you would like to work at the booth for several hours, please contact Scott Green at [email protected]. We need members with their dogs who are good representatives of the breed who are well socialized. We take turns placing several dogs on the tables that are covered with a carpet or blanket. Pheasant Fest attendees ask questions about the breed, ask how the dogs are in the home, hunting in the field, and how they are with children, and other dogs. People of all ages— grandparents to small children, like to talk to and pet our dogs on the tables. The SMCA hands out brochures on our SM breed, and brochures listing SMCA Approved Breeders with their contact information.

National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic combines a national consumer show, wildlife habitat seminar series, and family event complete with puppies, tractors, shotguns, and art. It’s grown to be the country’s largest event for upland hunters, sporting dog owners, and wildlife habitat conservationists. Clare and I ran the Natural Ability test this past weekend with Clare achieving a 96 Prize 3. The lone obstacle standing in her way of a 112 Prize 1 was her disdain for bumpers in the water, so we needed to use a dead bird. I'm proud of this pup and all the work and progress she's made in her training over these past few months. I knew going into the test she may not swim for the bumpers. She likes to swim with Britta and for other, more exciting objects (sticks, lily pads, and a Dokken dummy) but she made it clear to me over the summer that bumpers just aren't her favorite, in water or out. If we had a couple more months to prepare, I think we could have worked through that. Now that testing season is over, I'm looking forward to seeing how she handles wild birds in these next few months.

I'd also like to congratulate Ascheland's Benchmark (Winnie) and Ascheland's Boone Forrest (Forrest) on their 98 Prize 3's in the Natural Ability test on Sunday! I'm proud of the handlers, Britta is proud of her pups and Clare is proud of her brother and sister.

Britta informed me this morning that I was quite late in wishing all of the A litter puppies a very happy 2nd birthday! I hope all the pups had a great day!

Now that all her brothers and sisters have gone off to their forever homes, Ascheland's Belle Clare (Clare) got to enjoy a nap with mom. Clare is the newest addition to the Ascheland Kennel family.
