Each day brings so many emotional ups and downs, today was not different. Our tiny black and white baby, Jasper Pelican, found in the gravel in an alley in St. Paris had fought so hard. Supported with pain meds, feedings, and taken home by our wonderful RVT Crystal and spoiled by her and Miss Violet, just simple stopped trying. We knew his head injury was severe but for a few days he seemed to be making progress, Dr Emy examined him on Tuesday and prescribed new meds which we had compounded at Wedgewood Pharmacy in hope this addition would help. But today he made us understand that he had done all he could to fight and was ready to stop trying. Crystal brought him back and we both cried and kissed him goodbye. I thanked Crystal for her and sweet Violet trying so hard and giving him the love in a few days he should have had his entire short life. I told her how happy I was to have some one not only with strong RVT skills but a heart so big for every baby that comes through our doors and what a blessing she is to the Sanctuary. We can not save them all but we really try.
Our panleukopenia baby continues to improve and tonight as last patient I took care of his needs in isolation and gloved up to be safe. He showed me that now that he is feeling better, even with having lost both his eyes, he is a bit of a feral little fellow and warned me to beware of his fierce feral nature. He is so tiny I am not terrible afraid but I told him that he was truly scary and I was very frightened. Hopefully building up his ego will help along with sub Q fluids, vit B, Cerenia, , Metronidazole, Clavamox, Mirtazapan, and twice a day treatment. He is eating, no vomiting today, and no diarrhea. You never know with such a wicked virus but hopefully we are moving in the direction of recovery.
