Thinking about fostering?

Some of the most common concerns we hear are:

“I don’t have enough time to be a foster parent.”

Fact: Most kitten fosters last just 2 to 4 weeks. They show up too tiny to adopt, and just need a safe place to grow. You give them a few weeks of love, and we’ll do the rest. Then you watch them go from barely surviving to thriving, all because of you!

Just here for the season? That works too! A few weeks is all it takes to save lives that wouldn’t have made it without you.

“I can’t afford to foster.”

Fact: You don’t have to pay a dime. We supply everything they need: food, litter, kennels, bowls, litter boxes, and toys. You bring the space and the heart, and we’ll handle the rest. Found a litter yourself? We’ll stock you up so that you can keep them safe until we can step in.

“I can’t be a foster parent. I’d want to keep them all!”

Here’s what Phoebe’s foster mom, Diane, had to say: I usually tell people that it’s natural to want to keep them & that makes you a good foster because you really care about the animals. But when you know they’re going to a good home & see how happy the adopters are, it makes it easier to let them go. There are always more animals who need you too.

What happens to kittens when shelters are full? Some will be abandoned. Many won’t be found until it’s too late. Fostering can help prevent this tragedy by opening up space so that shelters can say yes. Yes, we can take your kittens. Yes, we can help.

The kitten in these photos is named Phoebe, and she was found underweight, cold, and suffering from fleas. We treated her, then sent her to foster care.

The first photo of Phoebe was during intake. The second photo was taken at her foster home, just one week later.

Kittens like Phoebe are especially at risk in the shelter setting. No matter how much love and care we give them, we can’t 100% eliminate the risk of illness. Shelters often take in cats who carry common illnesses like upper respiratory viruses. For healthy adult cats, these illnesses are very treatable. But for young kittens with underdeveloped immune systems, they can be deadly.

That’s why we need you.

Kitten season is here, and shelters are quickly filling up. We need foster parents to help keep these babies safe and healthy, while opening shelter space for the next animal who needs us.

Become a foster parent and help us keep saying yes. To learn more, please send us a message or call the shelter at 906-643-7646.

Happy early birthday, Kota! This sweet boy will be four years old this month and is ready to find his new home!

Kota is gentle, playful, affectionate, and enjoys the company of other cats. We’ve found that he can be a little nervous in new situations, so he would likely do best with calm, respectful children who will give him space and time to settle in.

He hasn’t had the greatest experience with dogs, so any dogs in the home should be calm and respectful of cats. We strongly recommend keeping dogs on a leash during introductions to new cats and supervising interactions until you know how they will react to one another.

Kota is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and his adoption fee is $40. If you’d like to meet him, please stop by the shelter. Our address is 980 Cheeseman Rd, St. Ignace, Michigan. Our adoption hours are from 10am-2pm seven days a week!

It’s Where Are They Now weekend, and this weekend’s featured pet is Romeo!

If you have been to the shelter in recent months, you may have been greeted by a fluffy orange tabby named Romeo! Or you might have seen him sprawled out on the office chair as a staff member perches precariously on the edge of the seat. No matter where he is, he’s not easy to miss! This is the story about how Romeo came to be our resident feline ambassador.

Romeo came to the shelter in February, after having been seen wandering around outside for over a month. He was very underweight and suffering from frostbite on his ears and the pads of his feet. It was clear that he had been starving while trying to survive the harsh winter, and wouldn’t have made it outside on his own much longer. The lady who had brought him to us had saved his life.

It took quite a while for him to fully recover, and as we cared for him, we learned that he was an unusually chill cat with a calming presence that made other cats feel at ease. He would often befriend cats who were very skittish around people, and we noticed that they would lay close to him and even cuddle with him.

He wasn’t bothered by dogs, and we could allow our leashed shelter dogs to approach him to see how they reacted to a cat. Thru Romeo, we were able to gain valuable insight into our shelter pet’s personalities, which we could in turn pass along to the potential adopters who were interested in them.

Romeo proved to be so helpful that he was given a permanent role at the shelter as our resident feline ambassador. But helping us to evaluate other animals isn’t his only job- he also holds the unofficial title of emotional support cat, as he will quietly lay beside or in the laps of visitors, purring as they pet him.

He also recently helped a visitor to begin to overcome their fear of cats by just quietly laying beside the person- not being pushy, not climbing onto them, but just by being a steady, comforting presence. It was a huge first step for our visitor!

Here are some photos of our sweet boy, starting with the day he went to the vet to be treated for frostbite, to his life today. As an added note- he did end up losing part of his ear due to frostbite, but we think it just adds to his charm. 🥰
