More excellent info from this group who are experts at finding and catching lost dogs. Contact them if you are missing a dog or know of an abandoned dog who needs to be caught. They do not charge a fee, but donations are always appreciated.

First Step When a Dog is Lost:
"LEAVE THEM ACCESS or STAY PUT!”

It’s normal lost dog behavior for dogs to circle back to the area where they went missing, even if they are unfamiliar with the location. But this will only happen if they are not pushed away by well-meaning people trying to catch or call them, or other environmental stressors.

✅ Yes—this includes newly adopted dogs!

We’ve witnessed this behavior firsthand with:
💚 Anubis – new to the neighborhood
💙 Rusty – a 5-month-old puppy
🩷 Riu – lost during a hike
🩵 Nacho – a foster dog
🧡 Chester – lost from a relative’s home

IF LOST FROM A HOME:

🔹 Leave access points open – gates, doors, garages, etc.
🔹 Use scent items strategically:
• Bonded dogs – Place an item belonging to their favorite human or pet/livestock elevated (to catch wind) and another on the ground near where they left.
• Newly adopted/foster dogs – Use the dog’s own blanket, collar, or crate bedding in the same way: one elevated, one grounded.

IF LOST FROM A CAR ACCIDENT, TRAIL, OR WILDERNESS AREA:

🔹 Don’t leave the area.
Stay where you were last together. You are the strongest beacon of scent and familiarity.
If needed, set up a camp or rotate shifts with friends/family so someone familiar remains at the site.

🔴 Every case is unique

These strategies are foundational but should always be customized to fit the situation and behavior of the individual dog. Your recovery plan may need to adjust as new information comes in.

Welcome to Waggintails!

We’ve had a lot of new followers recently, so we wanted to take a moment to reintroduce ourselves and explain how we work as well as highlight what’s inside our “Toolbox” to help bring lost dogs home.

🐾Who We Are

Our main team is made up of our Director Kimber and Chally. When needed, we’re supported by our amazing volunteers Jill, Chris and our board of directors. We’re all passionate about helping families reunite with their missing dogs.

🐾How Waggintails Works

If you reach out for help, your first step is submitting a request for "Help" https://www.waggintails.org/get-help on our website. We’ll respond with a customized “Toolbox” we’ve developed—this includes a step-by-step guide that families can follow to generate sightings and safely recover their dog.

🐾What’s in the Toolbox?

An explanation of Lost Dog Behavior, especially Survival Mode (where even friendly dogs may become skittish or avoidant even with their own people)
The essential Dos & Don’ts for increasing your chance of recovery
Guidance on signage, scent articles, and awareness
Tips for managing emotions and staying strategic
How to track sightings and build an action plan

🐾Trap Support & Coverage Areas

When a dog goes missing and can’t be safely approached, humane trapping is often the key to recovery. Here’s how our team helps:

Kimber regularly provides trap support across multiple counties, including:

🔹Washington County
🔹Clackamas County
🔹Multnomah County
🔹Columbia County

She also travels outside these areas when needed and available—just reach out to check availability.

Chally covers Eugene and surrounding cities, providing local expertise and on-the-ground support for families in that region.

Please remember: humane trapping takes patience, planning, and teamwork.

🐾A Reminder

We are 100% volunteers who also work full-time jobs but we’ve chosen to dedicate time to helping families like yours. We know how overwhelming this situation can be, and we’re here to guide and support you with proven methods that work.

You’re not alone. We’ve got your back.

🐾We Never Charge – But We Do Rely on Support

At Waggintails, our services are always free. We believe that no one should have to pay for help when their beloved dog is missing.

That said, we do have ongoing expenses—from trap maintenance and gas to signage supplies and printing materials. Every bit of support helps us continue doing what we do.

Every donation makes a difference, no matter the size. And even if you’re not able to give, sharing our mission helps us reach more families—and save more dogs.

If we’ve helped you, or if you believe in what we do, consider supporting us or spreading the word.

Thank you for being part of the Waggintails family🐾💕
