Muddy Paws Dog Boarding and Obedience School is a veteran owned and operated dog boarding and training business.

April started her career with dogs in 2004 when she became a Military Working Dog Handler in the US Air Force. She was part of the elite Presidential K9 Team at Andrews Air Force Base. There she provided security for the President, Vice President, and First Lady, among many other foreign heads of state. She continued her military career as a K9 handler in South Korea and Alaska with a deployment t

o Afghanistan. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Business administration in 2016 and is currently enrolled in the Dog Obedience Trainer course with Animal Behavior College. April has been doing in home boarding with Rover. com since 2014 and trained dogs for the Department of Defense to become future Military Working Dogs.

🐾🏡 Training Happens at Home Too! 🏡🐾

Dog training doesn’t have to happen only during dedicated training sessions. Some of the best opportunities to practice obedience happen during everyday household chores!

Here my pack is working on a Down-Stay while I water my flowerbeds.

Was it perfect? Nope.

Did a few dogs break position and need to be put back? Absolutely.

And that’s okay!

Consistency is what builds reliability. If your dog gets up and leaves a position, it’s not the end of the world. Simply guide them back to the position they just left and continue on. Every repetition is a learning opportunity.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s teaching your dog that the command still applies, even when life is happening around them.

The more you incorporate training into your daily routine, the more reliable your dog will become in the real world.

Today is more than cookouts and long weekends. Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We are forever grateful to those who never made it back home, and we also remember the loyal military working dogs who stood beside them in service and sacrifice.

From all of us at Muddy Paws, thank you to our fallen heroes and their families. Your courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten!

🐾✨ Training Spotlight: Mr. Watson! ✨🐾

Mr. Watson has been working hard on overcoming some dog reactivity, and we’re so proud of the progress he’s made!

With the help of our awesome training assistants, Miss Denali and Miss Lanni, Watson practiced staying calm and focused while being around other dogs in public.

Training around neutral dogs in real world environments helps build confidence, improve decision making, and teach dogs that they can remain calm even with distractions nearby.

Seeing Watson successfully work in the presence of two other dogs is a huge win, and we can’t wait to watch his journey continue!

We’re now booking for June and July!

Let’s Talk About Uncomfortable Surfaces

Not all surfaces are easy for dogs. Things like grated floors, slick areas, or uneven textures can feel strange and even scary at first. That’s why it’s so important to expose your pup to a variety of surfaces and teach them to stay calm and confident.

Here Miss Denali and Miss Renegade are showing that grated surfaces are no big deal! They practiced staying relaxed and settling in place, even with distractions around them.

Bonus distraction: we had a visitor nearby cleaning up trash, and the girls handled it like pros, just calmly observing without breaking focus.

And in the last photo (look closely!), I’m actually in the next pavilion over putting their Stay to the test!

Building confidence on different textures helps create a dog that can handle real-world environments without stress.

Training Together in a Multi-Dog Household!!

Working dogs together is a whole different level of training, and these two are just getting started!

Here we have Miss Ember and Mr. Scooter practicing their Come-Sit and Place-Stay side by side. 💪🐶🐶

Is it perfect? Nope.
Is it progress? Absolutely. 🙌

This was their first time practicing together, and learning to focus around each other is a huge step toward real-life reliability. With consistency, structure, and practice it only gets better from here!
