April started her career with dogs in 2004 when she became a Military Working Dog Handler in the US Air Force. She was part of the elite Presidential K9 Team at Andrews Air Force Base. There she provided security for the President, Vice President, and First Lady, among many other foreign heads of state. She continued her military career as a K9 handler in South Korea and Alaska with a deployment t

o Afghanistan. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Business administration in 2016 and is currently enrolled in the Dog Obedience Trainer course with Animal Behavior College. April has been doing in home boarding with Rover. com since 2014 and trained dogs for the Department of Defense to become future Military Working Dogs.

PET & SPORT DOG FIRST AID CLASS!

Would you know what to do if your dog was injured, became ill, or experienced an emergency? Knowing what to look for and how to respond quickly can make all the difference while getting your dog to veterinary care.

Join us on August 22nd for a full day of practical Pet & Sport/Working Dog First Aid!

PET DOG FIRST AID, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Topics include:
• Safe handling of sick & injured dogs
• Recognizing life-threatening emergencies
• Checking vital signs & knowing what’s normal
• Building & using a pet first aid kit
• Managing common emergencies including wounds, poisoning, burns, choking, heat injuries & more

LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED
12:00–1:00 PM

SPORT & WORKING DOG FIRST AID, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Topics include:
• Safely handling injured working dogs
• When to muzzle and when not to
• Rapid field triage & vital signs
• Stabilization & safe carry techniques
• Building & using a working dog medical kit
• Common injuries & emergencies including heat injuries, collapse, wounds, snake bites, paw & eye injuries, fractures, sprains, bloat, toxin exposure & more

COST:
One class: $100
Both classes: $175

Want to be prepared at home or in the field? First aid kits will be available for purchase, but they must be pre-ordered at the time of registration for the class.

Training Tip Thursday: Is Your Dog Waiting… or Just Hesitating?

Have you ever told your dog to Sit, Down, or Come, and they eventually do it… but only after thinking about it first?

That hesitation can tell us a lot!

A well-trained dog should respond promptly and confidently to a known command. If they’re slow to respond, it may be because:

❤️ They aren’t fully fluent with the behavior.
🤍 There are distractions competing for their attention.
💙 The command hasn’t been practiced enough in different environments.
🐾 The reward isn’t valuable enough for the situation.

The good news? This is something that can absolutely be improved with consistent training and proofing!

Remember, obedience isn’t just about knowing the command, it’s about performing it reliably, anywhere, anytime.

Enrichment Spotlight: Frozen KONGs!

Looking for an easy, inexpensive way to keep your pup mentally stimulated? A Frozen KONG is one of our favorite enrichment activities!

These puppy sized KONGs were made for the puppy April is currently raising for the Department of War as a future Military Working Dog. Even future working dogs benefit from slowing down, using their brains, and enjoying a rewarding challenge!

Our recipe is simple:
🥣 Kibble
💧 Water
🥄 Topped with PLAIN yogurt
❄️ Freeze until solid

That’s it! No fancy ingredients needed.

Frozen KONGs are a great way to:
🐾 Provide mental stimulation
❤️ Encourage problem-solving
🤍 Slow down fast eaters
💙 Help soothe teething puppies
🐾 Keep your dog occupied in a positive way

Sometimes the simplest enrichment ideas are the most effective!

🧘 Calmness Is a Skill Too! 🐾

When people think about dog training, they often picture sits, downs, and recalls. But one of the most valuable behaviors you can teach your dog is simply… how to relax.

Here, Renegade, Ivan, Denali, and Lanni are demonstrating exactly that by calmly settling on their Place.

For multi-dog households, this skill is especially important. Teaching each dog to settle in their own space helps create a peaceful home, reduces excitement and conflict, and encourages calm behavior even when other dogs are nearby.

The goal isn’t to constantly entertain your dog, it’s to teach them that it’s okay to simply relax and do nothing. That’s a skill that benefits both dogs and their owners!

Consistency and practice turn calmness into a habit, making everyday life much more enjoyable for everyone in the house.
