POLL TORSION…

One of the best ways to address head tilt is to take the axis, the joint responsible for the majority of rotation, out of the equation by straightening the neck, therefore isolating the AO joint.

And we can do this by simply asking for a lateral release, then bringing the nose back to center to take the torsion out of the poll.

Pull torsion is the number one cause of poll dysfunction and poll tension that I see, and it’s caused by everyday handling where we are constantly pulling the horse’s nose out from plumb.

The more we can stay off their head, and stop pulling on the lead and the inside rein, and lead and ride back to front, the better.

Here's an effect of saddles that are too narrow.

When I've come across this, the physical and emotional trauma I've felt in the horse has been sickening. The physical damage is done - you can't put back what's gone.

The emotional distress can be enormous and I sincerely believe it's emotional trauma that has built up over many months and/or years, as an unprotesting horse continues to do as asked, despite the problem being exacerbated whenever the rider's weight hits the saddle.

Perhaps they become numb to it over time, and it's only with deep and gentle work that the problem is revealed. I hope that enough of the distress is released for the horse to continue its ridden career with renewed heart.

I've usually been with a new owner when we've come across this, thankfully not that many times, and we've taken heart that the horse knows its needs (and pain) are seen and heard. Sometimes we can't change what's there and what's been done, but we can certainly help with the horse's response to it.

This isn't a new observation - there's a reason Balance Saddles call this the 'junction' - but it's always worth building awareness and *empathy. (Please excuse the limitations of images - it can be hard to find what I need!)

Now offering saddle fitting services.

Poor saddle fit can contribute to soreness, lameness, resistance, muscle wasting, restricted movement, and performance problems — even when the issue isn’t obvious.

Shellie is educated through Saddlefit 4 Life as an Equine Ergonomist, plus additional education through a UK-based saddle fitting program. She offers independent saddle fitting services focused on horse comfort, biomechanics, and performance.

Fits both Western and English saddles and offers:
• Static & dynamic fit evaluations
• Tracings & back mapping
• Horse and rider measurements
• Rider balance assessment

Shellie is not affiliated with any saddle brand, allowing her to focus entirely on what works best for the horse and rider.

Please note: Shellie is not a saddle maker, so she does not perform saddle repairs or tree adjustments.

Helping horses move better, perform better, and stay sound starts with proper saddle fit.
