Did you know? Lavender essence has a calming effect on horses? I use a dropper full of lavender essential oil before each massage (dabbing it on their neck and allowing them to inhale it deeply from my hands). It relaxes the horses allowing them to benefit more from their bodywork session!

As we start to approach hotter temperatures here in Phoenix, here are some helpful wellness tips to keep your horses happy and healthy!

1. WATER WATER WATER! Fresh, clean water is the MOST important thing to keep your equine friend healthy! And keeping it algae and bacteria free is a must. Also keeping water buckets shaded and water temps cool is necessary as well.
2. Add electrolytes to their water! Salt, potassium, magnesium - all important minerals necessary for optimal equine health. There are many awesome electrolyte supplements out there on the market.
3. Shade shelters - this is important for your horse to take a break from that intense Arizona sun/heat.
4. Insect repellants/fly spray and fly masks - these are necessary to keep your horse comfortable and to prevent fly bites or insect bites that could possibly spread disease.
5. Slow down! Take a break from intense training or riding when the temperatures rise.
6. Trailering - be careful trailering during high temps. Try to limit trips to early morning or late evening as metal horse trailers can severely heat up in the prime hot hours of the day.
7. Vaccines and checkups - don’t forget spring vaccines and doing an annual health checkup with your vet.
8. Keep COOL! Hosing off your horse with cool water can help an overheated horse recover from any type of heat exhaustion.

Taking a little time off to rest and recover from knee surgery. I will resume work soon!! (And using the same ice boot I use on my horses!)

Using the same ice boot that I used on my horse Beaux!! 😂😂😂 If it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me! Day 2 after knee surgery walking and feeling great!!!
