Rattlesnake season is here — and in less than ONE WEEK, we at Republican Valley have already treated 4 dogs for rattlesnake bites.
Snakebites can quickly become life-threatening, causing severe swelling, pain, tissue damage, shock, clotting abnormalities, and sometimes death without prompt veterinary treatment.
For dogs that spend time hiking, hunting, working cattle, or living in rural areas, the canine rattlesnake vaccine is sometimes used as part of a preventative care plan. While it does NOT replace emergency treatment, published veterinary research and field use by clinicians suggest it may help reduce the severity of envenomation and potentially provide additional time to reach veterinary care in some cases.
Peer-reviewed veterinary literature on rattlesnake envenomation and prevention:
• A multicenter clinical study on canine rattlesnake envenomation and treatment outcomes (PubMed): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21827591/
• Peer-reviewed research evaluating the canine rattlesnake vaccine and immune response/clinical outcomes (PubMed): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32670855/
What we strongly recommend:
✔ Keep dogs leashed on trails
✔ Avoid tall grass, brush, and rocky areas during warm weather
✔ Consider rattlesnake avoidance training
✔ Talk with your veterinarian about whether the rattlesnake vaccine is appropriate for your dog
✔ Seek IMMEDIATE veterinary care if a bite is suspected — even if your dog is vaccinated
Signs of a rattlesnake bite:
• Sudden swelling of the face or limb
• Pain or vocalization
• Weakness or collapse
• Bruising or bleeding
• Vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
Even vaccinated dogs can still require antivenin and intensive treatment. Rapid veterinary care is the most important factor in survival and recovery.
This is a retrospective multicenter study (2006-2012) examining a population of dogs with moderate to severe crotalid envenomation for protective effects of the canine rattlesnake vaccine. Five nonacademic emergency and referral veterinary hospitals in Southern California were involved in the study....
