Minnie’s story:
Last year, five newborn baby kittens were found under a storage shed and were rapidly declining in health since momma kitty had not returned. They were rescued and stabilized with fluids and started on around the clock bottle feedings. A live trap was set out in hopes their family could be reunited if momma cat returned.
The next morning Minnie (a very skinny, approximately 8-9 month old feral cat) was trapped. We assumed she was the momma of the kittens. We took her in with plans to let her raise her kittens, spay her and if she remained feral, she could at least be a barn cat. We got her settled into our quiet guest room, but she had no interest at all in the kittens and we resumed bottle feeding.
One week later, the mystery was solved. Minnie went into labor with her OWN kittens. She WAS a mamma kitty, just NOT the momma kitty of our initial 5 kittens. Thank goodness she was in our care because she had birthing complications due to being so small and underweight. This poor young cat, not even a year old yet, was having kittens of her own. The first kitten had become stuck and did not survive. She was in pain and was terrified and did not trust humans. Thankfully she finally allowed us to help her and she birthed 4 other kittens.
She was a wonderful mom to them and all of her babies were adopted into wonderful homes. She tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV, has been fully vaccinated, and has been spayed.
She has now decided that humans can be trusted and that house life beats the street life. She has been in our home around our cats and our calm/ cat respecting dogs and seeks love and attention from her people numerous times daily.
Now it is Minnie’s turn for her happily ever after ending. She is looking for an indoor only home with someone who is willing to give her time to acclimate and feel comfortable in her new place. Loud noises and chaos often cause her to hide and it takes her time to warm up to new people. She will likely do best if she has her own quiet place like a bathroom or guest room to settle into and get comfortable at her own pace before she explores her new household.
