That milestone belongs to Michele and to the cat parents of Lake Monticello who trusted her with their feline family and their homes. But it matters to anyone considering a MEOW! of their own, because Lake Monticello is not Tampa Bay. It is a lakeside community in Fluvanna County, Virginia — the kind of market a national franchise brand would scroll right past on a demographic map.

Last weekend I went to my local pet store for something completely ordinary — a topical treatment for my cat. I walked the whole store twice and couldn't find it. Finally gave up and asked the woman at the register, and she pointed me to the dog section. Not because it was a product for both animals. It was a cat product. It just lived in the dog aisle because that's where the shelf space happened to be.

I found what I needed. But before I left, I stood there for a minute and actually looked around — really looked, which I'm not sure I'd ever done before. Aisle after aisle of dog food. Dog toys, dog beds, dog crates, dog treats, dog shampoo. Dog everything.

Cats got a stretch of wall.

I don't think the industry ignored cats out of malice. I think it built for the customer in front of it and never revisited the assumption.

There’s something deeply meaningful about spending your days in the quiet company of cats.

Running a cats-only pet sitting service has been a dream come true.

It’s a daily reminder of how powerful trust can be— Each cat has their own story, their own boundaries, their own way of connecting, and being invited into that space is something I never take for granted.

Some hide, watching from a distance. Some greet you like you’ve always belonged. And then there are those moments—soft purring, a gentle nudge, a slow blink—that feel like a quiet kind of acceptance. Those moments stay with you.

Caring for cats isn’t just about meeting their basic needs. It’s about showing up with patience, respect, and a genuine understanding of who they are. It’s about being a steady, comforting presence when their world feels a little different.

I feel incredibly grateful to do this work. To be trusted not only by the people who love them, but by the cats themselves. There’s a kind of joy here that’s hard to put into words, but I carry it with me every single day.

As a Gen Xer, I remember coming home to an empty house and only my beloved cat to tell my day to. A recent report shows that Gen X cat ownership surged by 8% this past year, and a whopping 54% of us now have a feline roommate!
As our kids head off to college or start their careers, we’re returning to our roots. Why? Because cats offer that low-maintenance loyalty we’ve always valued (and they’re way better at binge-watching 80s shows than the kids were!).
