At our staff meeting last month we did an activity called "The Story". We were given a very short snippet of a situation and then a group of statements we had to decide if they were true, false, or unknown. First we each went through individually and made our choices, then we got into small groups and discussed and came up with a group answer.

This activity reminded us that when we work together and communicate as a team we do better than when we work alone! We are so thankful for such an amazing and hard working team that works hard to communicate with each other and our clients to achieve the same goal: helping pets stay happy and healthy! ๐Ÿ’•

It's time for some TICK TALK!

While it doesn't happen very often here in our area, if you travel with your pet to wooded areas or up North where ticks are more prevalent, you may come across a tick embedded in your pet. When Running Man of came to us, we found some tick larvae on him!

Forget everything you've heard about removing ticks with petroleum jelly, burning, or twistingโ€”those old wives' tales can make things worse! Here's what actually works: fine-tipped tweezers or a Tick Tornado, grabbing as close to the skin as possible, and pulling straight up with steady pressure.

If you find a tick on your dog and you are unsure or uncomfortable about how to remove it, give us a call at 727-725-1691 and we will be happy to help!

Today is the 1st day of Sumer! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ– Hope you're enjoying it a nice shady spot like Sophia, Dr. Woodman's lab.

We've all heard about hot cars and scorched pavement, but let's talk about the sneakier summer dangers: BBQ skewers left at snout level, open windows without screens, fertilizers that curious paws track inside, and water bowls that grow algae in the heat.

What surprising summer hazard have you discovered? Drop us a warning below! โฌ‡

Brandy came in recently because she had some scabbing on her ears and had been scratching at them a little. When Dr. Woodman looked down into her ears using the otoscope there was some brown debris. Due to these symptoms, he was concerned Brandy may have an ear infection.

We took swab samples and then completed an ear cytology which is when we put the debris onto a glass slide, stain it, and then look at it under the microscope to see what type of organism is causing the ear infection.

Under the microscope we found some yeast (each little purple dot picture is a yeast, they look like little purple peanuts under the microscope) as well as cocci (a type of small, round bacteria). We prescribed a medication to put into Brandy's ear daily for a few weeks, then we will have her come back for us to recheck her ear cytology and make sure the infection has cleared up!

Until June 30, if your pet comes in for anything involving itching and sees the doctor, we are offering $50 off. To schedule an appointment, call or text us at 727-725-1691 or use the link below:

Pets can get ear infections for a variety of reasons! From having water in their ears after a bath or swimming to environmental allergies.

One of the best ways to prevent ear infections from occurring is using a ear cleaner with drying agent anytime after they have been swimming, got a bath, and/or outside playing in the rain. You can also preemptively clean their ears once a week to get rid of any wax or debris build up!

Tofu took Take Your Cat to Work Day seriously this year by scaring her mom (our office manager Catharine) into taking her to Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Clearwater since we had already closed for the day.

Tofu suddenly developed blood in her urine and was straining to urinate. To ensure there was no bladder stone or urinary blockage, Catharine took her to VEG where they did an x-ray and gave her a pain injection. Thankfully there was no stone or blockage. The next day, Tofu came to see Dr. Grennon. We did a urinalysis to ensure there was no infection and Tofu was diagnosed with feline stress cystitis. We started her on a urinary + stress diet from Hills and she has been doing well at home since then!

Did you know we accept same day urgent care appointments. If your pet is having a problem, call us at 727-725-1691

"But I'm just a babyyyyyyy" - Finley
Finley was spayed recently. She was whining a little in her cage but as soon as Kim picked her up for some cuddles she was more than happy to be here with us!

Each pet responds to anesthesia a little different, just like with humans! We also want to ensure your pet is as safe as possible during any sedated procedure. Here at Animal Hospital of Northwood, we have one doctor and one technician dedicated to your pet and their procedure from start to finish on the day of surgery.
