I kept seeing "weekly electrolyte baths" recommended in reptile groups like it was standard care.

So I went looking for the research.

What I found: peer-reviewed studies from 1966, 1990, and 2001 all proving the same thing—reptile skin is a water BARRIER, not a sponge.

Your bearded dragon gets hydration from:
🦗 Food (60-70%)
💧 Drinking (20-30%)
🌫️ Humidity retention (10-15%)
❌ Skin/cloacal absorption (0%)

That "perk up" you see after a bath? It's the warm water raising their metabolism—not electrolytes absorbing through impermeable scales.

The $12/bottle industry is selling a solution to a problem that proper enclosure humidity prevents entirely.

Full research breakdown with citations in the Learning Center.

Weekly electrolyte baths are recommended for bearded dragons across the reptile industry. But peer-reviewed research from 1966 to 2001 proves reptiles cannot absorb water through skin or cloaca. Here's what's really happening when you soak your gecko—and why proper humidity eliminates the need ent...

I've been digging into the research on communal housing for baby beardies, and there's a fascinating debate happening that I'd love your input on.
Most pet shops house hatchlings together and sell them around 3-4 months old. After that, they're almost always going to live solo in their new homes. But here's what's got me thinking: does that brief communal period actually shape their adult personality?
I'm hearing theories that:

Subordinate "underdog" babies might develop defensive aggression as adults
Dominant babies might see their handlers as competitors later
Completely isolated babies might be too submissive

For those of you with multiple dragons over the years—have you noticed personality differences based on when they were separated from clutch-mates? Did your pet store dragon (likely communal until 3-4 months) behave differently than breeder dragons that were separated earlier?
Genuinely curious what your hands-on experience has shown. The science is still catching up to what you all have been observing for years.
