The Sacramento Zoo is proud to partner with the Rafael Crespo Conservation Fund and the University of Florida Croc Docs Lab as they work to preserve the habitat of the American alligator and the American crocodile. 🐊
The Rafael Crespo Conservation Fund was created in honor of Rafael Crespo, the lead biologist at the University of Florida's American Crocodile Monitoring and Assessment program for Everglades Restoration. The fund helps future conservationists with scholarships to help preserve Rafael's legacy of protecting the Everglades and conserving crocodilian species.
The Croc Docs Lab at the University of Florida are a team of biologists, ecological modelers, and outreach specialists in Florida and throughout the Caribbean. They monitor and research the impacts of invasive species, climate change, and human impacts on crocodilians and other imperiled species.
The Sacramento Zoo is home to two crocodilian species, the American alligator and the smooth-fronted caiman. The smooth-fronted caiman is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
"At the Sacramento Zoo, we are lucky enough to care for these incredible animals every day," says Brandon Fuentes, one of our animal care supervisors. "With partners like the University of Florida, we’re working to inspire and train the next generation of conservation champions. Together, we’re building a future where crocodilians don’t just survive—they thrive!"
Every time you visit the Sacramento Zoo, you are helping support the Rafael Crespo Conservation Fund, and all of our incredible conservation partners.
