Okay everyone, this is Ginger.
The condition she came into the salon in was truly heartbreaking. She was severely matted, with foxtails embedded into her legs and underarms causing painful infections. One of her eyes was completely matted shut and attached to her upper lip, and she was also covered in fleas.
The last time I saw Ginger was about a year ago, and unfortunately she was already in rough condition then. At that appointment, I explained to her owner how important it was to keep Ginger on a consistent grooming schedule to prevent situations like this. Sadly, a year later, her condition had become even more severe.
Cases like this are incredibly difficult emotionally because as groomers, we can only do so much. I truly wish there were better resources and stronger protections for pets experiencing neglect. My main focus today was making Ginger as comfortable as possible and helping relieve the pain and discomfort she was living with. I also strongly advised the owner that Ginger needs immediate veterinary care, and we had an honest conversation about the level of care she requires moving forward.
One thing I want people to understand is that severe matting can hide serious medical issues underneath. Until I began grooming her, I didn’t realize just how extensive her condition was. Had I known at drop-off how severe everything underneath the coat was, I would have recommended a veterinary visit before grooming, because there is only so much we can safely do as groomers.
I also want to thank everyone who reached out after seeing my story and expressed concern and compassion for Ginger. It means so much to have such a caring community that genuinely loves animals and wants the best for them. The Spaw Day family is truly something special, and I’m grateful every day to be surrounded by people who care so deeply about pets in need. 💛
