Why Tennis Balls Can Be Dangerous for Dogs

Many people don’t realize that tennis balls can be harmful—even deadly—for dogs. One major concern is the risk of choking. As dogs chew on the ball, it can split or collapse in their throat, blocking their airway. This can lead to a tragic and sudden emergency. Pieces of the ball can also break off and be swallowed, potentially causing internal blockages.

Aside from choking hazards, tennis balls can damage your dog’s teeth over time. The fuzzy surface, although soft to us, acts like sandpaper against a dog’s teeth. Constant chewing can wear them down—a condition known as “blunting.” This wear can lead to exposed tooth pulp, discomfort, and difficulty eating.

In some cases, damage can be so severe that the tips of the teeth need to be capped. Unfortunately, there have been both working dogs and family pets who have died because of tennis ball accidents. Often, it happens when a dog is left unsupervised, pops the ball, and then accidentally swallows part of it.

As a professional trainer, I never recommend using tennis balls with dogs. There are much safer alternatives out there designed specifically with canine safety in mind.

Welcome Gunner! 🐾

Meet Gunner, a 12-week-old German Shepherd mix with a big heart and a lot of excitement! He’s always eager to greet his family, loves cuddles, and enjoys his bonding rest times. Gunner is also naturally alert and protective, which makes him a wonderful companion. However, like any puppy, he’s still learning the ropes when it comes to behavior.

Gunner is working on house training for bathroom trips, crate training, and he’s been having some issues with nipping and chewing. His pawrents, Landon and Alison, are dedicated to helping him become a more manageable dog, creating space for everyone to enjoy his presence without the frustration. We’re excited to help Gunner grow into the well-behaved companion he’s meant to be!

Welcome Lottie! 🐾

Meet Lottie, a 5-month-old Giant Schnoodle with a loving and affectionate personality. Like any puppy, Lottie has a few behaviors that need some attention. She loves to jump on guests, and while she’s kennel trained, she tends to have accidents when free roaming the house. Lottie also shows signs of fear or anxiety—sometimes even aggression—when drying off after a bath. Her pawrents, Haylee and Elijah, are committed to helping her overcome these behaviors. Through training, they hope to help Lottie become a happy, well-behaved pup who can enjoy life to the fullest. We're excited to be part of Lottie’s journey and help her grow into the best version of herself!

Welcome Trouble! 🐾

Meet Trouble, a 15-week-old Belgian Malinois with a sharp mind and a protective nature. Like any puppy, Trouble has a few behaviors that need some attention. He tends to play bite and grab shoes, boots, pants, and other items around the house. But his dad, Jerome, is fully committed to correcting these behaviors and guiding Trouble to be the best pup he can be. Jerome's main goal is to teach Trouble proper obedience and control, ensuring that he grows into a confident, well-behaved companion. We’re excited to be a part of Trouble’s training journey and help him unlock his full potential!

Welcome Rumor! 🐾

Meet Rumor, a 10-month-old Vizsla with a sweet and loving nature. Like any puppy, Rumor is still working on a few behaviors that need some attention and correction.

She’s had some challenges with pulling on the leash and jumping on people, but her dad, Tim, is fully committed to helping her grow and become the well-behaved companion they know she can be. Their goals include getting Rumor to walk calmly on a leash without pulling, teaching her not to jump on people, and ensuring she has a reliable recall, especially off-leash for her own safety. Tim is also focused on addressing the playful nipping (puppy biting) Rumor tends to do to get attention, and of course, strengthening her general obedience skills, including commands like sit and stay.

We're excited to be part of Rumor's journey and help her become the best version of herself!

We did it! Athena has officially graduated from basic obedience training and behavior modification! 🐾✨

Watching her journey has been nothing short of inspiring. When Athena first came into our lives, she was a bundle of fear—unsure of the world around her and hesitant to trust. But with time, patience, and lots of love (and treats! 🍖), she has blossomed into the confident, beautiful soul we always knew she could be. 💖

Training wasn’t just about commands—it was about building trust, creating a safe space, and helping her discover her strength. Today, she walks with her head high, tail wagging, and eyes full of curiosity instead of fear. 🐕

So proud of how far she’s come. Here’s to new adventures, continued growth, and celebrating every step forward. 🌟 Way to go, Athena! 🎓🎉

Ellie is officially a graduate! 🎓🐾

She just finished basic obedience training, and we are so proud of our smart, sassy girl. From day one, Ellie loved training—tail wagging, eyes bright, always eager to learn (especially when treats were involved). 🍖🐶 Her adorable personality made every session fun, and her progress has been amazing. She’s got the sit-stay-down game on lock, and she still melts hearts everywhere she goes. 💖

Way to go, Ellie—you’re a star! 🌟✨

Meet Munson, the 4 1/2-year-old Red Labrador 🐾🎉

Munson is a sweet and goofy boy with a heart full of love. While he’s always been a loving companion, Munson has faced some challenges along the way, particularly with walking and leash aggression. His playful, silly side shines through once he's comfortable, but there’s a deeper side to him that needs some guidance.

Munson has always struggled with insecurity, experiencing separation anxiety and heightened leash aggression since he was a puppy. Despite working with three trainers and being actively involved in the process, Munson’s aggression escalated over time, making walks more difficult and worrisome for his family. Despite graduating from multiple training programs, his leash aggression has reached a point where his pawrents, Claire and Bruno, are committed to working through it and finding lasting solutions.

Munson’s family wants to help him eliminate his “red zone” dog behavior when walking, reduce his separation anxiety, and build his confidence without medicating him. They understand his gentle nature and are determined to help him find peace and security without changing who he is.

We’re excited to help Munson with this next phase of his journey and work together with Claire and Bruno to bring out the best in him! 🐕🌟

Meet Max, the 5-month-old Golden Retriever who’s as sweet and friendly as they come! 🐶💛 While Max is full of love, like any pup, he’s still working on some behaviors, like leash manners, jumping on people, and listening to commands.

Max's mom, Rayssa, is committed to giving him the best start by addressing these behaviors. We’re excited to work with Max to help him grow into the well-behaved companion he’s destined to be! 🌟🐕

We’re here to help Max become the best version of himself! 💪

Welcome Buddy! 🐾🎉

Meet Buddy, the adorable 8-week-old Golden Retriever and the newest member of his family! 🐶💛 Buddy is full of energy, love, and playfulness, but like all puppies, he has some behaviors that need to be shaped.

Geoffrey, his furdad, is committed to giving Buddy the best start in life by enrolling him in puppy training. From potty training to crate training and basic obedience, we’ll be working together to correct those early puppy behaviors and set Buddy up for success! 🚀

We’re excited to help Buddy grow into the well-behaved, happy dog he’s meant to be! 🐕✨

Happy Graduation, Jax! 🎓🐾

Congratulations to Jax for graduating from intermediate obedience and some behavior modification training. Jax got signed up to learn all the basics, plus how to interact with his horse and cat siblings. 🐴🐱 We were able to get Jax to coexist nicely with them. We were also able to accomplish off-leash training around their big property. 🏡 We even had time to get in some Home Depot training. 🛠️ Jax was a quick and eager learner. He now has the freedom to have more fun in his life. 🎉

Happy Black Saturday from Alan's K9 Academy! 🐾✨

While Black Saturday is a day of remembrance and reflection, it’s also a time to think about how we handle challenges in life, just like we do with training our dogs. It’s in these tough moments that growth and transformation happen.

Just as we help our furry friends overcome their challenges, it’s important to remember that setbacks aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to grow, both for us and our dogs. Every struggle is a stepping stone to a better tomorrow.

On this Black Saturday, take a moment to reflect on:

🐾 Resilience: Just as we stand strong in the face of hardship, our dogs learn to push through their challenges with our guidance and support.

🐾 Patience in Progress: Progress takes time, and each small step counts toward creating a calmer, more confident dog.

🐾 Transformation: Every setback is a chance for growth. With consistent training and love, your dog can overcome anything!

We’re here to help you and your dog on your journey, no matter what obstacles you may face along the way. 🐕💪

Happy Good Friday from Alan's K9 Academy! 🐾✨

As we reflect on the meaning of Good Friday, it's a perfect time to think about patience, growth, and renewal — all qualities we nurture in our furry friends. Just like in life, training our dogs requires patience and consistency. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings us closer to the best version of our pups.

On this special day, remember:

🐾 Good things take time – Just like faith, training requires patience, consistency, and trust. Every session with your dog builds towards long-lasting results!

🐾 Small progress is still progress – Don’t be discouraged by setbacks; each step forward is a success. Even the tiniest improvements add up over time.

🐾 Growth is a journey – Just as we celebrate renewal today, think of every training session as an opportunity for your dog’s growth and transformation.

May your Friday be full of peaceful moments with your dog, and remember — training is a journey, not a race!

Magnus is officially a graduate! 🎓🐾

It wasn’t always easy — in fact, Magnus was very reluctant to train at first. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about sit-stay routines or recall drills. But with a lot of patience, consistency, and most importantly, discovering what truly motivates him, he made incredible progress. 💪✨

Through training, we’ve watched him blossom and really start to express the sweet, goofy, lovable personality we always knew was there. 🐶💖 We’re so proud of how far he’s come — from stubborn stares to wagging tails and eager responses. 🐾

Here’s to you, Magnus — certified in basic obedience and 100% good boy material! 🎉

Congratulations to Bailey for graduating intermediate obedience and behavior modification training. 🎉🐾 Bailey needed to learn all the basic commands like sit, down, look, stay, bed/free, quiet, come, leave it, and no. 🐕💡 Bailey also needed help with some excessive barking, not coming when called/running away, and leash manners. Glad to say that she accomplished all of that in our time together so they can now all live a calmer, less stressful life! ✨

How Age Affects Learning in Dogs: What Every Pet Owner Should Know 🐾

Did you know that age plays a big role in how your dog learns? Whether you have a playful puppy, a focused adult, or a wise senior, understanding how age affects learning can help you tailor your training approach for the best results!

Here’s what you should know:

🐾 Puppyhood (Up to 1 Year) – The prime time for teaching new behaviors and socializing! Puppies are like sponges and are highly receptive to learning.

🐾 Adulthood (1-7 Years) – Adult dogs are great at focusing for longer periods and learning more complex tasks. It’s a perfect time to teach advanced commands!

🐾 Senior Dogs (7+ Years) – While senior dogs may take a little longer to learn, they’re still capable of learning new things! Patience and consistency are key in this stage.

No matter their age, your dog is always ready for learning—adjust your training methods, and watch them grow!

🌟 Ready to start training or enhance your dog’s skills? Give us a call at (470) 648-6512 or visit alansk9academy.com for expert tips and guidance. Let’s unlock your dog’s full potential, no matter their age!
